First-Ever International Hackathon in Jhapa Creates a Lasting Impact

18th August 2025, Kathmandu

In a landmark event for Eastern Nepal’s tech community, Gomendra Multiple College hosted the first-ever international hackathon in Jhapa, “Programmer Unknown Battleground.”

Jhapa international hackathon

The 48-hour event, held from 29 Shrawan to 31 Bhadra, brought together a diverse group of talented developers and innovators from across Nepal and even from neighboring Sikkim.

The hackathon was a significant step toward decentralizing Nepal’s tech ecosystem, which has historically been concentrated in Kathmandu. As organizer Abiral Acharya noted, this event was a “golden opportunity for developers from Eastern Nepal” and marks a new milestone for the region. The hackathon’s success demonstrates that talent and innovation are not confined to major cities.

Celebrating the Winners and Innovators

After a rigorous 48-hour development period, 15 top teams presented their projects to a panel of expert judges: Denial Thapa, Binilraj Aadhikari, and Lok Priya Khanal. Only 10 teams made it to the final round, where their hard work and creativity were recognized across several categories.

Here are the winning teams that stood out with their groundbreaking projects:

Grand Winner: Team Aroma Hackforce (Bharatpur)

Empowering Culture: Team Fluid

Global Business: Team Nellow (Birtamode)

Telemedicine: Team NepDev

Social Impact: Team NepDev

Best IoT: Team Babuzz

The participants were guided by an inspiring team of mentors, including Aashish Bhandari, Bhaskar Rijal, Arjun Tiwari, Karna Tamang, and Kaushal Niroula, who provided invaluable support and expertise throughout the event.
