The announcement came on the occasion of the British monarch’s birthday, as part of a list that honours individuals for their service to society.

Dedication To Social Work

Katwal expressed his happiness after the award was made public. He said the honour was not just his alone. He credited his family, community, and the team that worked with him in social service. He added that their constant support and inspiration made his contributions possible.

The British government recognised Katwal for his outstanding contribution to the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped more than 250,000 people by providing them with free meals. In addition to that, he engaged in various other social initiatives that benefited the broader public.

Active In The UK Nepali Community

Katwal owns the Panas Gorkha Restaurant in South London. Alongside his business, he operates the Panas Helping Hands Charity, which runs several community-focused programs. His charity efforts have reached many people across the UK, especially within vulnerable communities.

In recent years, Katwal’s work has received attention not just within the Nepali diaspora but across British society. A few months ago, he was also listed among the 100 most influential people in Britain.

History And Significance Of MBE

The MBE was established in 1917 by King George V. The honour is granted to individuals who make long-term, meaningful contributions to society. The Royal Palace presents it to those who create a positive impact and serve as examples for others.

This year, 1,200 individuals received royal honours. Notably, 48% of the awardees were women. These awards covered multiple sectors, including health, education, business, public service, and community development.

Following Other Notable Nepali Figures

Katwal joins a growing list of Nepali-origin personalities recognised by the UK. In 2023, mountaineer and ex-Gurkha Hari Budha Magar received the MBE. Earlier in 2018, world-famous climber Nirmal “Nims” Purja was also honoured with the same award.

These recognitions showcase the growing influence of the Nepali diaspora in international society. It also highlights how Nepali individuals continue to make significant contributions beyond their homeland.

Awards Beyond The MBE

Katwal’s charitable work has earned him several awards. He received the Points of Light Award, a prestigious recognition given by the UK Prime Minister to outstanding volunteers. He also holds the Freedom of the City of London, an honour that reflects civic contributions.

His charity, Panas Helping Hands, continues to support causes related to food, health, and community welfare. The organisation played a critical role during the pandemic and remains active in local social work.

From Biratnagar To Britain

Born in Biratnagar, Nepal, Sujan Katwal moved to the United Kingdom in 1998. Since then, he has grown into a successful entrepreneur and a respected social worker. His journey reflects hard work, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility toward community development.

Katwal’s MBE honour is a proud moment for the Nepali community worldwide. It reflects how dedication and service can gain international recognition. His story continues to inspire youth, diaspora members, and social workers across borders.

Through this achievement, Katwal has set a powerful example. He has shown that meaningful social work and community care can lead to national and global appreciation.
