Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has taken a significant step toward becoming a smart, safer city by signing a comprehensive agreement with Nepal Telecom (NT) to establish a city-wide CCTV camera network.

This crucial partnership, formalized between the municipal authority and the national telecom provider, ensures that the visual feeds from all CCTV cameras installed by the Metropolitan City will be effectively transmitted to and monitored in a centralized control room.
The KMC Nepal Telecom CCTV Network collaboration is foundational to enhancing public safety and security across the capital. Under the terms of the agreement, Nepal Telecom will actively provide the necessary connectivity infrastructure for the surveillance system.
This includes delivering a local intranet via its Optical Fiber Network, specifically utilizing the high-speed FTTH (Fiber to the Home) technology, to connect the Metropolitan City’s central offices and all ward offices.
Telecom’s Role in Network Reliability and Maintenance
Nepal Telecom’s commitment goes far beyond simply laying the fiber. The agreement stipulates that NT will provide a full suite of services essential for maintaining a reliable, 24/7 surveillance system. These critical services include:
- Regular Maintenance: Performing scheduled checks and maintenance to ensure the network’s continuous optimal performance.
- Emergency Restoration: Quickly restoring service in the event of unforeseen damage or disruptions, minimizing downtime.
- Technical Assistance: Offering continuous technical support to KMC’s operational staff.
- Network Monitoring: Providing robust monitoring capabilities to proactively detect and identify any service interruptions.
- Structural Provision: Offering necessary infrastructure support to ensure service continuity even during emergencies.
NT is actively tasked with providing the crucial support necessary to rapidly identify and resolve service disruptions, ensuring the surveillance system remains operational when it is needed most.
KMC’s Responsibility and Future Expansion
While Nepal Telecom is responsible for the network backbone, KMC retains the duty of providing the core surveillance equipment. The Metropolitan City will manage the supply and installation of all CCTV cameras, routers, and associated hardware necessary for the network’s functionality.
This division of responsibility ensures specialized focus from both partners. Looking toward the future, the agreement actively accounts for technological evolution and potential service expansion.
Nepal Telecom has committed to providing high-speed bandwidth as required by the city in the future. NT will also manage the necessary technology upgrades to keep the network current and efficient.
Should the Metropolitan City decide to expand its surveillance coverage, NT is obligated to extend the necessary optical fiber network to meet KMC’s evolving needs for the KMC Nepal Telecom CCTV Network.
This partnership between KMC and Nepal Telecom is a bold step towards realizing the “Smart City” concept.
It leverages modern fiber-optic communication technology to build a secure, reliable, and scalable surveillance infrastructure, demonstrating the effective collaboration between a major public utility and local government to improve urban living standards.
