Kathmandu University (KU), renowned for its dedication to research and innovation, recently organized an interactive session between its Vice-Chancellor and PhD scholars.
KU Strengthens Research Excellence
The event, hosted by the Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Division, celebrated KU’s robust ecosystem for doctoral studies, further solidifying its reputation as a hub for academic excellence.
Since its establishment, KU has awarded Ph. D.s to 203 scholars, and 280 students are currently pursuing their doctorates across six schools: Arts (20), Education (77), Engineering (61), Management (17), Medical Science (24), and Science (81).
Key Initiatives Supporting PhD Scholars
KU’s initiatives to support its doctoral candidates include:
- Research Fellowship Program: Professors can mentor at least one PhD student annually under a full fee waiver scheme, promoting mentorship and academic growth.
- Faculty Development Program: KU faculty members receive support for pursuing PhDs through university resources or external funding from organizations like the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).
- Research Projects: Programs like Hydro Himalaya (NORHED II), NORPART, and EnergizeNepal provide fee waivers, funding, and international exchange opportunities.
State-of-the-art facilities and Global Collaboration
KU provides advanced research facilities through the Nepal Technology Innovation Centre (NTIC), fostering a conducive environment for academic excellence. PhD students also benefit from Joint/Dual/Exchange PhD Programs with international universities like IIT Hyderabad, NTNU, USN, and Wuhan University, enabling global exposure and interdisciplinary learning.
- Specialized Research Centers
- Scholars have access to world-class facilities, including:
- School of Science: Aquatic Ecology Centre (AEC), Himalayan Cryosphere, Climate, and Disaster Research Centre (HiCCDRC).
- School of Engineering: Turbine Testing Laboratory (TTL), Green Hydrogen Lab (GHLab).
- Other Schools: Center for Buddhist Studies, KUSOM Policy Lab, etc.
