His oath-taking ceremony, along with two other ministers, is scheduled for tomorrow morning at Sheetal Niwas.
According to sources at Baluwatar, Ghising will not only lead the Ministry of Energy but also oversee Physical Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development — making him one of the most influential figures in the new cabinet. His return to government is seen as a strategic move to restore public confidence in Nepal’s energy and development sectors.
Kulman Ghising: Power Sector Reformer
Ghising is best known for ending the country’s decades-long electricity load-shedding crisis during his tenure as Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). Widely celebrated as a symbol of effective leadership, he transformed Nepal’s power supply reliability and helped unlock new opportunities for hydropower exports.
Despite his dismissal under a previous government, Ghising’s popularity remained intact, with widespread public demand for his reinstatement. His comeback as Energy Minister is expected to revive momentum in:
-
Expanding hydropower generation and exports.
-
Modernizing the national grid and rural electrification.
-
Promoting clean energy and sustainable infrastructure.
-
Coordinating transport and urban development with energy planning.
Other Cabinet Appointments
Alongside Ghising, former Finance Secretary Rameshore Khanal has been named Finance Minister, while senior advocate Om Prakash Aryal will head the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Law. The list of appointments is preliminary, and additional portfolios may be allocated in the coming days.
Public Expectations
Analysts believe that Ghising’s appointment signals a renewed push for infrastructure-driven growth and energy self-sufficiency. With Nepal facing economic challenges and political transitions, his leadership could play a decisive role in building resilience and attracting foreign investment in the power sector.
The return of Kulman Ghising as Energy Minister is being hailed as a people’s victory, reflecting the government’s intent to place reform-oriented leaders at the forefront of national rebuilding.
