Under the agreement, the city will also cover 100% of the premium for specific groups, including municipal police personnel, sanitation workers, drivers, single women residing in the metropolis, and local health promoters (Toll Health Promoters – THPs).
Two-Year-Old Program With Patan Hospital
Lalitpur Metropolitan had initiated the health insurance program two years ago in technical collaboration with Patan Hospital. Insured individuals are currently receiving services through YL Health Center, the first point of contact for the program.
Mayor Maharjan noted that the initiative is a pioneering step in enhancing the city’s health services. “This program marks the starting point of quality healthcare services for the residents of Lalitpur,” he said. He also mentioned that the partnership with Patan Hospital began during the COVID-19 crisis, with the metropolis supporting the installation of an oxygen plant at the hospital and contributing to the upgrade of the mortuary house.
Plans For Expansion
Due to increased pressure at the YL Health Center, Mayor Maharjan announced that the metropolitan office is preparing to expand the center to a more suitable location.
City Shows Commitment To Public Health
Executive Director Kafle of the Health Insurance Board praised Lalitpur Metropolitan for its proactive approach. He said the city’s decision to bear 40% of the premium showcases its serious commitment to the well-being of its citizens.
Spokesperson for Lalitpur Metropolitan, Raju Maharjan, claimed that this makes Lalitpur the first local government to contribute toward its residents’ health insurance premiums.
Director of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences, Dr. Ravi Shakya, described the decision as significant for expanding the reach of the national health insurance program.
During the signing ceremony, a symbolic cheque handover also took place, highlighting the metropolis’ financial contribution to the health initiative.
