The academic landscape in Koshi Province is set to expand significantly. Classes for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc Nursing) are preparing to launch.

This follows the Koshi Province Government’s handover of Dhankuta Hospital to the Manmohan Technical University BSc Nursing program. This move will finally allow the technical university to enter the medical education sector.
Dhankuta Hospital Handover Paves the Way
The provincial government’s decision is crucial. It directly enables the university to start the long-awaited medical stream programs. According to university officials, the goal is to begin the BSc Nursing classes next academic session. This will happen at the designated Dhankuta District Hospital, which is being converted into a teaching hospital.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dr. Subhashshree Pokharel confirmed the development. He stated that the provincial government decided in May to transfer the hospital for teaching purposes. The final agreement process is now underway.
“We anticipate acquiring the Dhankuta Hospital by the end of this coming January,” Dr. Pokharel said. “We plan to commence the nursing curriculum by the end of April.”
Curriculum and Regulatory Compliance
The regulatory body, the Medical Education Commission (MEC), has been closely involved. Following MEC’s directives, the university has already prepared the curriculum for the BSc Nursing subject.
The university’s School of Medical and Health Sciences developed the four-year program. It adheres to all standards set by the MEC. Furthermore, the MEC’s Director, Prof. Dr. Sujbab Mahartha, has already inspected the curriculum. This step ensures that the program meets all necessary academic and quality requirements.
Delays in Program Implementation
Manmohan Technical University (MTU) was established by the provincial government in 2076 BS (2019/2020 AD). It is noted as the country’s first technical university. Despite its status, MTU faced delays in launching medical programs. This was primarily due to the protracted process of acquiring a teaching hospital.
VC Dr. Pokharel explained the situation. While they have completed the curriculum for various health technical programs, the university has been waiting for the final hospital transfer agreement.
Awaiting the Final Agreement
MTU has submitted a draft agreement to the Koshi Province Government. This is necessary to formalize the transfer of the hospital. However, the VC pointed out a hold-up. “Manmohan has already submitted the draft agreement to the Koshi government. Yet, the Health Ministry of the government has not moved the agreement process forward,” he noted.
The university is eagerly awaiting the government’s final decision. This agreement will officially designate the Dhankuta District Hospital as the university’s teaching hospital.
Current Programs at Manmohan Technical University
Despite the wait for the medical programs, MTU is already a functional university. It currently offers several programs through its constituent campuses. These include:
-
Engineering: Undergraduate programs in Civil and Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
-
Other Sciences: Pharmacy.
-
Law: A five-year integrated BBA-LLB program.
-
Postgraduate: LLM and Hospital Management subjects.
The addition of the Manmohan Technical University BSc Nursing program will mark a significant milestone. It will diversify the university’s offerings and address the growing need for skilled healthcare professionals in the region.
