He explained that since charging an electric vehicle takes some time, hotels, restaurants, and coffee shops can be established around charging stations to serve travelers, thereby generating jobs.
Speaking at the inauguration of a charging station launched by Change Digital in Samakhusi, Kathmandu, and other parts of the country, Minister Ghising emphasized the need to convert fuel-based vehicles into electric ones to control pollution and move Nepal toward a green economy.
Highlighting that charging station businesses represent a promising investment sector, he noted that they will have a positive impact on the national economy. By increasing the consumption of domestically produced hydropower in households, industries, and factories, Nepal can reduce petroleum imports, strengthen foreign currency reserves, and contribute significantly to economic growth.
The government has prioritized the use of electric vehicles through various policies and plans. It aims to increase the share of electric vehicles to 90% of private vehicles and 70% of public vehicles by 2030. By 2035, the target is to further raise these shares to 95% and 90%, respectively.
To promote electric mobility, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has already set up 62 charging stations across the country, while the private sector operates nearly 800 stations.
Similarly, the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) has been supporting charging station construction through the Sustainable Energy Challenge Fund, under the Central Renewable Energy Fund’s viability gap funding support. AEPC has collaborated with 18 companies on 45 projects across 124 locations to establish charging stations.
