MoCIT Partnership UNESCO For Nepal’s Digital & Media Advancement

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) and UNESCO have agreed to form a joint committee to bolster Nepal’s digital transformation and media development initiatives.

This decision was reached during a productive courtesy meeting held yesterday at the Ministry between Honorable Prithvi Subba Gurung, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, and Mr. Jaco Du Toit, UNESCO Representative to Nepal.
The discussions focused on a shared commitment to reinforcing Nepal’s national vision for digital transformation, promoting freedom of expression, fostering responsible media systems, and ensuring platform accountability in the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
The newly established joint committee will provide crucial support to the Nepalese government in policy formulation and implementation concerning digital transformation.
The meeting, which aimed at fostering strong collaboration on these key areas, was also attended by Ms. Radhika Aryal, Secretary of MoCIT; Mr. Aadesh Khadka, Joint Secretary of the ICT Division; Dr. Shaligram Parajuli, ICT Advisor to the Minister; and Ms. Nirjana Sharma, UNESCO’s Head of Communication and Information.
About UNESCO Kathmandu
The UNESCO Office in Kathmandu was established in 1998. Since then, the Office has grown into an established programme and advocacy agency in UNESCO’s fields of competence, namely education, sciences, culture, communication, and information, to contribute to building peace, alleviating poverty, and fostering sustainable development and intercultural dialogue.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT) was established in the year 2049 BS. The Ministry widely covers postal services, telecommunications, Broadcasting, Press & Information, and Film Development.
To develop and expand the information & communication sector up to the rural level in the form of infrastructure for social and economic development through widespread participation of the private sector, as well as with emphasis on the dissemination of information and communication technology.
To inform the public about the economic and social activities of the country and promote the democratic culture to safeguard and promote the freedom of expression and the right to information of the people and to ensure the institutional development of democracy while upholding the sovereignty, territorial integrity and national independence as well as the dignity of Nepal.

To make the information and communications sector active to preserve the various aspects of national identity and significance, as well as to secure people’s participation, international cooperation, and goodwill in the process of all-around development of the nation by creating public awareness.
