Goat farmers in Waling Municipality have embarked on a promising journey to enhance livestock productivity by adopting modern goat shed construction techniques.

Modern Goat Sheds Boost Livestock

With support from the Waling Agricultural Development Project, run in collaboration with Heifer Project Nepal, farmers are now transitioning from traditional, unmanaged goat farming to more systematic and commercial goat rearing practices.

The initiative aims to increase goat production, improve breed quality, and promote hygienic farming practices. As part of the project, farmers receive 50% subsidies to build modern sheds, making it easier for small-scale and women farmers to participate in sustainable livestock development.

Women Farmers Leading the Change

Among the early adopters is Ek Maya Mall, a Waling Municipality-5 resident who constructed her shed with municipal support. “We used to raise goats haphazardly. Now, with this modern shed, management is easier, and productivity is bound to rise,” said Mall, who currently rears 12 goats and plans to expand her herd.

Mall leads the Deepka Goat Farming Self-reliant Women Farmers Group, which has 30 active women members committed to commercial goat farming. The group is working together to uplift rural livelihoods by increasing production and practicing modern animal husbandry.

Group secretary Mathura Shahi emphasized, “Our focus is on boosting goat production while empowering women through agriculture.”

Government Support and Strategic Planning

Ward Chairman Chhabilal Ale confirmed that 10 farmers in Ward No. 5 have already constructed modern goat sheds. The municipality’s broader development framework includes designating pocket areas in Wards 1 through 7 to focus on agriculture and livestock.

Mayor Krishna Khan stated, “We’ve partnered with several organizations to engage women in productive agricultural practices. Breed improvement and systematic rearing are at the core of our livestock development strategy.”

Modernizing Agriculture for Economic Empowerment

Chief Administrative Officer Gangalal Subedi highlighted the municipality’s goal to transform subsistence farming into commercial, income-generating agriculture, especially for small-scale farmers. “We are building a foundation for long-term economic empowerment through modern farming infrastructure,” he added.

Dr. Roshan Basyal, head of the municipal animal services division, shared that 26 modern goat sheds have been built across Wards 4, 5, and 6. “Along with infrastructure, we’re providing farmers with training on goat management and hygiene,” he said.

Conclusion

With the rise of modern goat farming practices in Waling, Syangja, rural communities are witnessing economic empowerment and agricultural transformation. The municipality’s strategic investment in livestock infrastructure, training, and breed improvement is setting an example for other regions aiming to boost agricultural productivity and rural development in Nepal.
