Abdul Khan, Chairman of the Industry, Commerce, Labor, and Consumer Welfare Committee and a Member of Parliament from the Janmat Party has called for a clear separation between business and politics to safeguard consumer interests.

Speaking at a recent event in Kathmandu, Khan emphasized that involvement in party politics by industrialists and businessmen undermines efforts to protect consumer rights and ensure a fair market.

Khan highlighted that weaknesses in current laws have led to consumer exploitation, stressing the need for legislative reforms to address these gaps. He argued that the presence of industrialists and businessmen in politics complicates the enforcement of consumer rights and disrupts fair practices. “To protect consumer interests effectively, we must prevent industrialists and businessmen from engaging in political activities,” Khan asserted.

The MP criticized the influence of party politics on regulatory actions, recounting instances where his monitoring efforts at various industries were thwarted by political interference. He noted that even when industry inspections are carried out, calls from political leaders often result in a lack of action. This interference, Khan believes, compromises the protection of consumer rights and fair supply chains.

Khan also addressed the current political climate, noting that the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML hold significant power in the coalition government. He warned that if these parties fail to address consumer rights issues, they may face public backlash. “The people will not tolerate excuses if consumer rights are not upheld,” he warned.

Furthermore, Khan criticized the current trade imbalance, reporting that Nepal’s imports total NPR 15.52 trillion while exports amount to NPR 1.52 trillion. He expressed frustration with the bureaucracy’s focus on importation rather than the effective utilization of products, which he believes hampers the country’s economic progress and consumer protection.

In conclusion, Abdul Khan’s remarks underscore the necessity of maintaining a clear boundary between business interests and political influence to ensure that consumer rights are upheld and market practices remain fair. His call for reform and a reduction in political interference aims to create a more transparent and equitable environment for both consumers and businesses in Nepal.
