NADA & DoTM Vehicle Import Directive Discussed To Shape Nepal’s Automobile Policy 2082

On 17th Ashadh 2082 (1st July 2025), a delegation led by NADA President Karan Chaudhary held a meeting with the Director General of the Department of Transport Management, Mr. Rajiv Pokharel, to engage in an in-depth discussion on various issues related to the automobile sector.

NADA DoTM Vehicle Import Directive

During the meeting, President Chaudhary inquired about the preparations being made by the department regarding the “Vehicle Import, Production, and Installation Directive 2082” and appreciated the ongoing study and planning efforts. He emphasized the need for extensive discussions between NADA and the department on the proposed provisions of the directive before moving forward.

NADA Vice President Rajan Babu Shrestha, who was also present at the meeting, stressed the necessity of further dialogue on some of the points mentioned in the proposed directive. He expressed that a sequential and detailed discussion is essential to make the directive realistic and practical.

Similarly, NADA General Secretary Surendra Kumar Upreti stated that the government should penalize those who act wrongfully and reward those who act rightly. He further informed that battery industries have already been established within Nepal.

During the discussion, the department’s Technical Director, Mr. Shreekant Yadav, shared that studies had been conducted on the regulations adopted by the United Nations and the European Union while preparing the proposed directive.

Concluding the meeting, Director General Pokharel expressed that further discussions would be held with key stakeholders such as NADA to bring clarity to the policy. He also mentioned that, until now, there has been no clear rule regarding vehicle imports in Nepal, and hence, preparations are being made to bring such activities under a structured directive. He affirmed the department’s intent to move forward in collaboration with NADA on this matter.
