In a significant development for Nepal’s automobile sector, the Nepal Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) has officially postponed its much-anticipated Special General Assembly, which was originally slated for Tuesday, Bhadra 24, 2082.

NADA Special General Assembly Postponed

The decision, made during the 22nd Central Executive Committee meeting held today, Bhadra 19, 2082, was announced via a formal notice to all members, citing the need for an appropriate time to reconvene.

The postponement of the Special General Assembly has brought to the forefront the simmering internal disputes within NADA. While the official notice from NADA stated that the new date would be announced later, sources close to the association have confirmed that the decision was a direct result of a legal challenge and a formal complaint filed by disgruntled members.

The core of the controversy revolves around the association’s planned transformation into a federation, to be named NADA Automobile Federation Nepal.

This ambitious move, which was a key agenda for the now-postponed assembly, has been met with strong opposition from a faction of the executive committee and general members.

A formal ‘Note of Dissent’ was reportedly filed, alleging that the initiative was a ploy to bypass previous assembly decisions and unlawfully extend the tenure of the current leadership.

The petition, registered at the District Administration Office (DAO) in Kathmandu on August 16, requested a halt to the Special General Assembly, questioning the legality of its convention.

The petitioners argued that the assembly was being called without first holding the annual general meeting, a requirement as per the association’s statute.

In response, the DAO issued a directive to NADA, instructing them to postpone the assembly and demanding a formal clarification on several key issues. NADA’s leadership has been requested to appear at the DAO within seven days to provide details and justification for their decisions.

This is not the first time NADA has been embroiled in internal conflict. The current tensions are believed to be an escalation of long-standing disputes, which have been present since the election of the current executive committee.

Earlier, the association’s decision to appoint a Senior Vice President with the provision that he would automatically become the next President was challenged and subsequently invalidated by the DAO, reducing the said official to an ordinary member. Critics now claim that the push to become a federation is a direct attempt to circumvent these past decisions and create a new framework that secures the leadership’s position.

The Nepal Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), established in 1975, is a national-level organization that serves as an umbrella body for automobile importers, distributors, manufacturers, and dealers.

With over 3,200 members, the organization plays a vital role in the country’s economy, contributing over 20% of the government’s total revenue and providing employment to hundreds of thousands of people directly and indirectly.

The postponement of the Special General Assembly leaves a state of profound uncertainty regarding NADA’s future. The internal power struggles and legal challenges are expected to have a ripple effect on the entire automobile industry.

Stakeholders, including vehicle importers, spare parts dealers, and financial institutions, are closely monitoring the situation as the association navigates its current crisis.

The new date for the Special General Assembly will be a crucial turning point, determining the path forward for one of Nepal’s most influential trade associations. ICTFrame will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as they become available.
