This key route, connecting the country’s east-west and north-south regions, was rendered impassable. Authorities acted quickly, initiating a major road clearance operation. The goal was to restore connectivity and provide passenger aid to those affected.
The Landslide and Its Impact
The landslide occurred at Tuiun Khola in Ichhakamana Rural Municipality–6. Debris fell from a height of 70 meters, covering 160 meters of the road.
The massive pile of rubble was 10 meters wide and 16 meters high. This made clearance work extremely challenging. The landslide occurred on Friday evening, leaving thousands of vehicles and passengers stranded.
The Narayangadh-Muglin road is a critical artery, carrying over 10,000 vehicles daily. Its closure affected both commercial and private travel.
A Difficult Clearance Operation
Efforts to clear the road began on Saturday. However, they were hampered by ongoing debris fall. Division Road Office head Narayan Lamichhane confirmed that landslides continued to fall from above.
This made progress slow and dangerous. Clearance work was suspended on Saturday evening for safety reasons. It resumed early Sunday morning. According to Lamichhane, three machines from the Muglin side and two from the Narayangadh side were deployed. This coordinated effort aimed to clear the road swiftly.
If no further landslides occurred, the road was expected to reopen by Sunday afternoon. Deputy Superintendent of Police Rabindra Khanal also confirmed the ongoing work. He stated that six machines were in use, three from each side.
Community and Government Support
While clearance work was underway, a different kind of effort was in motion. Stranded passengers received much-needed support.
Local groups and authorities collaborated to provide passenger aid. Under the leadership of JCI Ichhakamana, free food and snacks were distributed.
JCI Vice President Prakash Shrestha noted that local youths also helped arrange accommodation. They housed stranded passengers at the Magar Society building in Muglin on Saturday night. Volunteers distributed noodles, biscuits, and water throughout the day.
The District Administration Office also joined the effort. They provided water and food to the stranded travelers on Saturday.
Advice to Travelers
Authorities urged drivers to use alternative routes to avoid the blocked highway. The District Administration Office issued this advisory to minimize congestion and prevent more people from being stranded.
The situation at the Narayangadh-Muglin road landslide highlights the challenges of road maintenance in Nepal’s mountainous terrain.
The quick response from both government agencies and local communities was key. Their combined efforts provided essential support to affected passengers.
The successful reopening of the road brought relief to many. It underscores the importance of prompt action and community spirit during a crisis.
The events at Tuiun Khola serve as a reminder of the fragility of our infrastructure. They also show the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
