National Investigation Department Chief
The Government of Nepal has officially appointed Tekendra Karki as the new Chief of the National Investigation Department (NID), the country’s sole intelligence agency. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday, Ashwin 5, 2082 (September 21, 2025). Karki’s appointment fills the position left vacant by the retirement of former chief Hutraj Thapa, who completed his three-year tenure on Bhadra 28, 2082 (September 13, 2025).
Tekendra Karki’s Background and Career
Originally from the Jumla District, Tekendra Karki has had a long and distinguished career within the NID. Prior to his promotion, he held the position of Additional Chief Investigation Director. He was considered a leading contender for the top post, alongside his batchmate Om Prakash Joshi. Both Karki and Joshi joined the NID with Hutraj Thapa in 1996 AD, and Karki’s ascension to the top position reflects his extensive experience and leadership within the intelligence agency. His career trajectory within the NID, culminating in his previous role as Additional Chief Investigation Director, has prepared him to take on the responsibility of leading Nepal’s intelligence operations.
The Role of the National Investigation Department
The National Investigation Department is Nepal’s primary intelligence agency, responsible for collecting and analyzing information related to national security, counter-terrorism, and other critical internal and external threats. It operates with a staff of over 2,200 agents and personnel who are tasked with providing intelligence to the central leadership. The NID’s headquarters are located in the Singha Durbar complex in Kathmandu. The agency’s role is particularly crucial in the current political climate, which has seen widespread unrest during the recent “Gen-Z” protests that led to significant damage to government and private property. Karki’s appointment is seen as a move by the government to maintain continuity and stability in intelligence operations during this sensitive period.
Term Length and Broader Context
Tekendra Karki’s tenure as Chief of the NID will be for three years, a term length that has been in place since 2019 following an amendment to the existing law. This term provides a stable period for the new chief to implement his strategies and oversee the agency’s operations. The government’s decision to maintain the three-year term reflects a commitment to a consistent leadership structure within the intelligence sector.
The appointment comes at a time of significant political and social change in Nepal, with a new interim government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki and ongoing efforts to address the aftermath of the recent protests. The government’s swift decision to appoint a new NID chief underscores the importance it places on national security and stability, ensuring that the transition of leadership at such a critical agency is seamless. Karki’s promotion from within the department is a clear indication of the government’s trust in his experience and understanding of the country’s intelligence landscape.
