8th March 2025, Kathmandu

The Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security is organizing the National Labour and Employment Conference on March 10-11, 2025, in Kathmandu. The conference aims to address Nepal’s employment challenges and explore solutions for promoting domestic job opportunities.

National Labour Employment Conference

The conference will focus on expanding production, enhancing productivity, and fostering sustainable internal employment. It is part of the country’s “Internal Employment Promotion Decade” initiative, which seeks to reduce reliance on foreign employment.

Minister of Labour Sharat Singh Bhandari emphasized that the conference would highlight the need for creating jobs within Nepal rather than relying on foreign employment. He aims to challenge the prevailing notion that Nepalis must leave the country to find work.

Creating Sustainable Job Opportunities

Minister Bhandari stressed that the main goal of the conference was to develop strategies for generating sustainable job opportunities in Nepal. “We want to create a better environment for local employment and reduce the pressure on foreign employment,” he said.

The event will feature discussions on the current state of the labor market, including an analysis of the challenges in foreign employment and the need for policy reforms to strengthen domestic labor markets.

Participants from All Sectors

Around 500 delegates from all levels of government, the private sector, trade unions, and research bodies will participate in the conference. They will work together to propose recommendations for improving employment and addressing challenges in both local and foreign sectors.

There will also be stalls providing information on labor and employment issues, where government and private sector representatives will share resources with attendees.

Addressing Foreign Employment Challenges

The conference will provide a platform to discuss the challenges of foreign employment, especially in light of the increasing number of Nepalis working abroad. Minister Bhandari pointed out that foreign employment continues to grow, but domestic employment must be prioritized to reduce this reliance.

Discussions will also focus on using remittance income for long-term development projects in Nepal while finding ways to improve the local labor market.

Collaboration for Effective Solutions

The conference will foster collaboration between different government bodies, private organizations, and development partners. Its main aim is to propose policy solutions that will boost domestic job creation, enhance skills training, and improve Nepal’s overall employment system.

The Ministry believes the conference will lead to meaningful policy suggestions, which will then be integrated into national strategies for employment and economic growth.

Shaping the Future of Nepal’s Workforce

The event is expected to help shape the future of Nepal’s labor market by focusing on job creation and skill development. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will officially inaugurate the conference, highlighting the government’s commitment to solving the country’s employment challenges.
