Governor Adhikari Thanks the Banking Sector
During his address, outgoing Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari expressed deep appreciation for the support he received throughout his tenure. He acknowledged the crucial role that commercial banks played during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He praised the sector’s leadership, which helped stabilize Nepal’s economy during the crisis. Adhikari emphasized that the success achieved after the pandemic was not just the central bank’s accomplishment, but a collective result of coordination and teamwork across the banking industry.
He also shared personal insights, stating that some policy decisions had been difficult. However, he argued that those decisions were vital for the long-term improvement of the sector.
Call for Vigilance and Support
Governor Adhikari urged financial institutions to learn from past mistakes. He stressed that the banking industry must remain cautious to prevent the repetition of previous errors.
He also offered continued support to the banking sector. If needed, he said, he would gladly share his knowledge and experience in the future.
Dr. Bishnu Paudel Takes Over with a Vision
New Governor Dr. Bishnu Prasad Paudel addressed the audience after being welcomed officially. He declared his full commitment to a stable and efficient banking system. Dr. Paudel highlighted his plan to build on the current policies rather than introduce drastic changes.
He made it clear that only necessary reforms would be considered. Existing policies that are already proving effective would remain in place. His focus, he explained, is on steady growth and long-term sustainability.
A Promise of Consultation and Collaboration
Governor Paudel promised to create future monetary policies through coordination with the banking sector. He emphasized the importance of consultation, transparency, and cooperation.
He noted that the central bank must work closely with financial institutions to make Nepal’s banking system stronger, more inclusive, and forward-looking.
Dr. Paudel asked for support from all stakeholders. He called on bank leaders to partner with NRB to develop policies that can serve both the economy and the people.
Industry Response: Gratitude and Optimism
Banking leaders who attended the event thanked former Governor Adhikari for his leadership. They recognized his calm and decisive actions during difficult times. Many praised his guidance during the pandemic and the recovery period that followed.
Representatives also welcomed Governor Paudel and extended their best wishes. They expressed confidence in his leadership and his approach to policy continuity and reform.
High-Level Participation
The event saw the participation of Chief Executive Officers and Deputy Chief Executive Officers of various commercial banks. Their presence reflected the importance of the leadership change at Nepal Rastra Bank.
Attendees agreed that working in harmony with the central bank is essential for financial stability and national economic growth.
Moving Forward with a Unified Approach
The program, organized by the Nepal Bankers’ Association, showcased unity within Nepal’s financial sector. It highlighted the value of collaboration during transitions and underlined the shared vision for the future.
Governor Paudel’s promise to uphold existing strong policies and introduce improvements only when needed brought a sense of optimism. His collaborative approach set a hopeful tone for upcoming reforms and innovations.
As Nepal navigates complex global and local economic challenges, strong coordination between NRB and the banking sector will remain crucial. Both governors—outgoing and incoming—emphasized that cooperation, prudence, and foresight will be key in shaping Nepal’s financial future.
