The re-election of Acharya is seen as a strategic move to maintain stability within an industry currently facing significant regulatory shifts and evolving market demands. Along with the presidency, a fresh 15-member executive committee was formed, blending seasoned industry veterans with emerging professionals committed to modernizing the reconditioned automobile trade in Nepal.
Highlights of the 10th Convention and Inaugural Session
The convention served as a platform to discuss the systemic challenges and growth opportunities within the reconditioned vehicle market. A key highlight was the inaugural session, where Rajan Pokharel, Chief of the Transport Management Office in Gurjudhara, delivered a strong message regarding the future of the trade. Pokharel highlighted the urgent need to regulate and systematize the recondition automobile business to ensure it aligns with modern legal standards.
Pokharel emphasized that strict adherence to ethical business practices and legal standards is not just a regulatory requirement but a necessity for the long-term sustainability of the sector. Maintaining high service quality and bolstering consumer confidence were identified as the primary pillars for the industry to move forward in a transparent manner.
Local Government Support and Collaboration
Addressing the assembly as a special guest, Navaraj Bhattarai, the Ward Chairperson of Budhanilkantha Municipality Ward No. 10 and municipal spokesperson, expressed the commitment of the local government to the entrepreneurial community. Bhattarai assured the association that local authorities would remain cooperative in resolving administrative hurdles faced by recondition business operators. He pledged to facilitate a more favorable business environment, recognizing the sector as a significant contributor to the local economy and urban mobility.
Formation of the New Executive Committee
The convention successfully elected a comprehensive 15-member executive committee under the leadership of Shyammani Acharya. The new leadership structure is designed to be proactive in policy advocacy and operational improvement.
The core leadership team for the new term includes:
- President: Shyam Mani Acharya
- Vice President: Suraj Prajapati
- General Secretary: Krishna Chaulagain
- Secretary: Bijay Thapa
- Treasurer: Ram Gopal Fuyal
- Joint Treasurer: Mahesh Joshi
The additional executive committee members include Ram Hari Gautam, Shivram Shrestha, Adarsha Chhetri, Rejin Koju, Krishna Hari Gautam, Pradeep Dhakal, Santosh Ghimire, Bipin Chaulagain, and Ujjwal Baniya. This diverse group is tasked with addressing critical issues such as taxation policies, vehicle quality certification, and the overall public perception of used and reconditioned vehicles.
Addressing Industry Challenges and Future Goals
The reconditioned automobile sector plays a vital role in the transportation ecosystem of Nepal by providing affordable vehicle options to a wide demographic. However, the industry has historically struggled with a lack of standardized valuation processes and fluctuating import regulations. The newly elected committee has committed to working closely with central government bodies and transport departments to streamline these processes.
In his acceptance remarks, President Acharya emphasized that the association’s focus for the upcoming term would be institutional credibility. He stated that the committee would prioritize:
Capacity Building: Providing training for members on digital documentation and transparent sales processes.
Policy Advocacy: Working with the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to create clearer guidelines for reconditioned vehicle ownership transfers.
Consumer Protection: Establishing a standardized code of conduct for all member showrooms to ensure that buyers receive verified information regarding vehicle history and mechanical status.
Acharya noted that the “recondition” label should become synonymous with reliability and fair pricing, rather than being seen as a risky alternative to new vehicles.
Conclusion
The re-election of Shyammani Acharya and the formation of the new Nepal Auto Recondition Association leadership mark a significant step toward the professionalization of the sector. With a renewed mandate and a clear focus on transparency and ethical business practices, the association is well-positioned to bridge the gap between automobile entrepreneurs and government regulators. As the committee begins its work, the goal remains to build a robust, trustworthy, and organized market for reconditioned vehicles in Nepal.
