Nepal China ICT Talks
14th October 2025, Kathmandu
Home Minister Omprakash Aryal and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, held a significant courtesy meeting at Singha Durbar on Tuesday.
Nepal China ICT Talks
The high-level talks focused on reinforcing the 70-year-long bilateral relationship and charting a course for accelerated cooperation, with a particular emphasis on digital collaboration and high-priority development projects.
Key to the discussion was deepening Nepal China ICT partnership and advancing projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Unwavering Commitment to the One China Policy
Minister Aryal used the platform to explicitly reiterate Nepal’s firm and unwavering commitment to the One China Policy.
He assured Ambassador Song that Nepal’s government would actively prevent any activities on its soil that could potentially undermine China’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
This clear affirmation underscores the bedrock of political trust and mutual respect characterizing the Nepal-China diplomatic ties.
The discussion highlighted the Five Principles of Panchsheel, which have historically guided the relationship. These principles ensure peaceful coexistence and non-interference, creating a stable environment for bilateral development initiatives.
Accelerating the Digital and Economic Agenda
The main thrust of the meeting revolved around tangible economic and technological cooperation.
Minister Aryal’s secretariat confirmed that both sides expressed a commitment to significantly expand collaboration across several strategic sectors.
These areas include trade, investment, infrastructure development, energy, agriculture, tourism, and most critically for the digital age, Technology Transfer.
Nepal sees China as a vital partner for bridging its technological gap. Enhanced Nepal China ICT cooperation is essential for modernizing Nepal’s public services, advancing its digital economy, and improving communication infrastructure.
The successful operation of cross-border fiber optic connectivity serves as a precedent for future digital ventures. Focus will now shift towards skill development and technical assistance in areas like data center infrastructure and advanced network deployment.
Advancing High-Priority BRI Projects
A substantial part of the conversation was dedicated to the BRI. Both Minister Aryal and Ambassador Song discussed the need to expedite priority projects falling under the BRI framework.
While the specific list of projects remains confidential, they typically encompass crucial connectivity infrastructure, including roads, railways, and cross-border power transmission lines.
The effective execution of these projects requires specialized technical knowledge and advanced Technology Transfer capabilities.
China is a leader in infrastructure technology, and its expertise is vital for navigating Nepal’s challenging mountainous terrain.
Prompt implementation of these projects will significantly enhance Nepal’s trade access, helping it transition from a land-locked to a land-linked country. Successful BRI completion will be a major indicator of bilateral cooperation success.
Strengthening Institutional Ties
The meeting further committed to strengthening institutional ties between the two nations’ governments and technical bodies.
Law enforcement cooperation, including border management and the fight against transnational crime, remains a consistent area of collaboration, which often leverages modern communication and surveillance technologies.
Overall, the meeting between Home Minister Aryal and Ambassador Song has solidified the political understanding.
It also has set a forward-looking agenda for deeper economic and technological integration, ensuring that the enduring One China Policy commitment paves the way for a practical, project-focused partnership to enhance Nepal’s development.
The focus on Technology Transfer in key sectors promises significant benefits for Nepal’s long-term digital growth.
