Nepal Reaffirms Commitment To Sustainable Food Systems at UNFSS+4 Summit 2025

Nepal actively participated in the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+4), held from 28–29 July 2025. The national delegation was led by Honourable Ram Nath Adhikari, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, reflecting the country’s high-level commitment to transforming its food systems.

The national delegation included:

Dr. Jay Bahadur Tandan, Member of the National Planning Commission and National Food Systems Convenor

Dr. Ram Krishna Shrestha, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development

Mr. Yam Lal Bhoosal, Joint Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers

This strong representation signaled Nepal’s ongoing dedication to addressing food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture.

Nepal’s National Vision Shared on Global Stage

In the Opening and Plenary Sessions, Minister Ram Nath Adhikari delivered key statements outlining Nepal’s vision. He emphasized:

Localization of national food strategies

Promotion of indigenous, nutritious foods

Expansion of climate-smart agriculture practices

The Minister also urged the global community to support least developed countries (LDCs) like Nepal through increased financial aid and capacity building. He stressed the need for global solidarity to build sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems.

Addressing Food Security and Climate Challenges

During the National Food Systems Transformation Convenor-led session, Dr. Jay Bahadur Tandan highlighted Nepal’s critical challenges in the food and nutrition sector. He pointed out:

Persistent child malnutrition rates

Climate change impacts on agriculture

To address these concerns, Dr. Tandan introduced Nepal’s Food Systems Transformation Strategic Plan (2024–2030). This plan focuses on:

Strengthening multi-sectoral coordination

Increasing resource mobilization

Implementing the Right to Food and Food Sovereignty Act

He also stressed the importance of localizing food system initiatives at the municipal level for maximum impact.

FAO’s Continued Support to Nepal

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) continues to support Nepal in achieving a hunger-free and sustainable future. FAO’s technical and policy support helps Nepal align national efforts with global food security goals.

Looking Ahead

Nepal’s participation in UNFSS+4 reaffirmed its dedication to food systems transformation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With strategic planning, international collaboration, and local implementation, Nepal is taking crucial steps to ensure food security, agricultural sustainability, and nutrition equity for all.
