Nepal’s Digital Revolution: A Blueprint for Becoming a Global “Digital Work Center”

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli recently cast a compelling vision for Nepal’s future, positioning the nation not just as a hub for tourism, but as a potential global “Digital Work Center.

“His remarks at the Digital Nepal Conclave 2025, organized by ICT Foundation Nepal, underscore a powerful strategic shift towards a technology-driven economy. This bold ambition is rooted in Nepal’s unique strengths and a clear commitment to fostering a digital-friendly ecosystem.
A Natural Advantage: Climate and Green Energy
A key argument presented by PM Oli is Nepal’s inherent suitability for digital operations. He highlighted the country’s naturally cool climate, which can significantly reduce the energy costs associated with cooling data centers and other digital infrastructure. This “cooling center” advantage, combined with Nepal’s abundant “sufficient green energy” resources from hydropower, presents a sustainable and economically attractive proposition for international tech companies. This dual benefit—environmental and financial—could be a major differentiator in attracting foreign investment and establishing a reputation as a green technology hub.
From Consumer to Creator: A New Digital Mindset
PM Oli’s address also emphasized a crucial change in mindset. He urged the nation to move beyond being mere consumers of foreign-made technology and to become creators and innovators in their own right. “We should not only use products made by others, but also create our own and keep pushing forward,” he stated. This call to action is a powerful message to Nepal’s talented youth and a clear signal that the government is committed to nurturing a homegrown tech industry.
He further demonstrated his personal engagement with the digital world, revealing his use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This candid admission, along with the announcement that Nepal has already introduced its AI policy, highlights a progressive approach to embracing cutting-edge technology. It also signals a government that is not only talking about a digital future but actively preparing for it.
The Path Forward: Digital Nepal Framework 2.0
The Prime Minister’s vision is not just rhetoric; it is backed by a strategic roadmap. He mentioned the transition to the Digital Nepal Framework 2.0, a new phase of the country’s digital era. This framework, which includes the rollout of 5G and the new AI policy, is designed to propel the nation into a new era of digital development. The government’s goal to raise the contribution of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector to 2 percent of the country’s GDP demonstrates a tangible commitment to making this a reality.
By focusing on a favorable climate, green energy, a skilled youth demographic, and a forward-thinking policy framework, Nepal is building a strong case for itself on the global digital stage. The country is demonstrating that being a “digital work center” is not just a dream, but a strategic and achievable goal.
