23rd March 2025, Kathmandu

On World Meteorological Day, Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance early warning and forecasting systems using advanced technology.

Nepal Early Warning Systems

He spoke at an event organized by the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat under the theme “Early Warnings for All.” Minister Khadka stressed the importance of early warning systems in reducing disaster risks and ensuring timely preparedness.

Boosting Forecasting Systems

The government is using radar and satellite technology to improve weather forecasting. Early warning services are now expanding to rural areas through mobile phones, helping communities receive timely alerts about potential risks.

“Early warning systems are essential for reducing disaster risks. The government is committed to making these systems stronger and more accessible,” said Minister Khadka.

Reducing Glacier Lake Risks

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) successfully lowered water levels in Chho Rolpa and Imja glacial lakes. This effort has minimized the risks of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), which threaten communities and infrastructure in the Himalayan region.

Focus on Glaciers and Climate Change

Glaciers are Nepal’s main source of water for hydropower, irrigation, and daily use. Minister Khadka emphasized the need for glacier conservation and stronger early warning systems to address climate change impacts.

“Protecting glaciers, improving early warning systems, and reducing risks are top priorities for the government,” he added.

New Hydrometeorology Policy

The government has introduced the Hydrometeorology Policy, 2081 to improve hydrometeorological services. This policy provides a structured framework for better coordination and resource management.

Expanding Services

Sarita Dawadi, Secretary of the Ministry, reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding DHM services. She emphasized that improving hydrometeorological services is a key priority.

Madhu Prasad Bhetuwal, Secretary of the Water and Energy Commission, highlighted the government’s collaboration with various organizations. These efforts focus on hydrometeorological services, climate change adaptation, and glacier conservation.

Conclusion

The government is actively working to strengthen early warning systems and use advanced technology for disaster risk reduction. With new policies and collaborative efforts, Nepal aims to build a more resilient future. -RSS
