First-Ever Large EU Diplomatic Visit

The EU delegation included Veronica Lorenzo, Ambassador of the European Union to Nepal. Alongside her were several EU country ambassadors based in Kathmandu and non-resident ambassadors from New Delhi, India. This is the first time so many EU diplomats have visited Nepal together.

They arrived for the Sagarmatha Dialogue, held from May 15 to 17 in Kathmandu. Their presence highlighted the growing interest of the EU in Nepal’s political and development landscape.

Reviewing 51 Years of Partnership

The meeting began with a reflection on 51 years of diplomatic relations between Nepal and the EU. Both sides appreciated the long-standing friendship and discussed ways to deepen collaboration in the years ahead.

Prime Minister Oli acknowledged the EU’s consistent support for Nepal. He thanked the bloc for backing Nepal’s democratic journey and for funding several development programs over the years.

Prime Minister Highlights Nepal’s Progress

During the interaction, Prime Minister Oli shared Nepal’s recent political progress. He explained how Nepal has moved from an armed conflict to peace through a people’s movement and constitution-making.

He emphasized that the constitution was created through the Constituent Assembly, reflecting the will of the people. Since then, Nepal has focused on economic growth and good governance.

According to him, Nepal now has a stable coalition government formed by two major parties—CPN-UML and Nepali Congress. This unity, he said, is aimed at national development.

Call for Greater Investment

Prime Minister Oli urged the EU to expand its investment in Nepal. He called for support in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, technology, and employment creation.

He stressed that Nepal’s current political system—a federal democratic republic—is here to stay. There is no turning back, he said. For him, Nepal’s future lies in stability and prosperity.

Foreign Policy: Friendly With All

Prime Minister Oli also spoke about Nepal’s foreign policy. He reiterated the principle of “Friendship with all, enmity with none.”

He made it clear that Nepal wants close relations with both India and China. At the same time, it remains committed to building friendly ties with all other countries, including those in the EU.

Appreciation for the Sagarmatha Dialogue

The Prime Minister thanked the EU for participating in the first-ever Sagarmatha Dialogue. He said the initiative highlights the need for global cooperation on climate, sustainability, and resilience—from the Himalayas to the ocean.

He expressed hope that this dialogue series will continue and grow stronger in the coming years.

Progress in Transitional Justice

On the topic of transitional justice, Prime Minister Oli assured the EU that Nepal is taking concrete steps. He informed them that the necessary legislation has already been prepared. Based on consultations, two commissions have been formed.

He said he is confident the work will now move forward without further delays.

EU Ambassadors Praise Nepal’s Efforts

In response, the EU ambassadors praised Nepal’s political stability and democratic progress. They also welcomed Nepal’s efforts in transitional justice and called for victim-centered approaches.

They expressed happiness that Nepal is taking steps toward concluding the long-pending transitional justice process.

Continued Support for Development

The EU diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Nepal. Their focus areas include education, healthcare, infrastructure, renewable energy, IT, and climate change.

They stressed the importance of cooperation in green energy and digital transformation. They also welcomed Nepal’s emphasis on transparency and good governance.

Congratulations on the Dialogue

The ambassadors congratulated Nepal on successfully organizing the Sagarmatha Dialogue. They said it sets a strong example for regional and global cooperation on pressing issues such as climate change and sustainable development.

They expressed willingness to support similar dialogues in the future.

High-Level Presence

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Oli’s Chief Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal and high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other dignitaries were also present.

Looking Ahead

The meeting between the Prime Minister and the EU delegation marked an important step in Nepal–EU relations. It underscored mutual interest in building long-term partnerships based on shared values—democracy, peace, and development.

As Nepal moves ahead on the path of stability and reform, the EU’s presence and participation send a clear message: Nepal matters to the global community.
