In a major move to expand digital connectivity, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) is set to launch free public WiFi services in 10 major cities across the country, as per the directive from Communications Minister Jagdish Kharel.
Nepal Free Public WiFi
This initiative is a significant step toward improving digital access and supporting the government’s vision of a ‘Digital Nepal’.
Phased Rollout and Approved Budget
The project will be implemented in a phased manner to ensure a smooth and effective rollout. The NTA aims to provide free WiFi in public places within the Kathmandu Valley in just two months. This will be followed by a broader expansion to the remaining nine cities within five months.
The budget for this ambitious plan has been officially approved, and NTA is currently in discussions with various Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to finalize the implementation details. Key areas of discussion include:
Public Spot Selection: Identifying high-traffic public locations such as bus parks, hospitals, and public squares to maximize accessibility.
Data Security: Establishing robust security protocols to protect users from potential threats on public networks.
Time Limits: Determining appropriate time limits for use to ensure fair access for all users.
What This Means for the Public
This initiative is expected to bring a host of benefits, particularly for students, tourists, and daily commuters who rely on internet access for communication, information, and education. It will also serve as a crucial step in bridging the digital divide, making internet services more accessible to a wider population. The NTA’s collaboration with ISPs on security and usage policies indicates a commitment to delivering a reliable and secure service.
While some free public WiFi spots have been available in certain areas, this new, government-backed project aims for a more widespread and coordinated rollout. The success of this project could pave the way for further digital infrastructure development in Nepal, creating a more connected and tech-savvy society.
