Nepal Government Prepares to Lift TikTok Ban
The Nepalese government is on the verge of lifting the TikTok ban that was imposed nearly a year ago. On October 27 of the previous year, the government, under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Prachanda, decided to close down the popular social media platform, citing concerns over its impact on social harmony.
The decision to potentially reopen TikTok follows a review of the platform’s compliance with Nepalese regulations. Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung has directed government staff to conduct the necessary studies to facilitate the lifting of the ban. This move comes as the government aims to ensure that all regulatory requirements are met and that TikTok adheres to local laws.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has also expressed a willingness to support the decision to lift the ban, signalling a shift in the government’s approach. Following this, the Minister has instructed officials to process the relevant documentation and gather feedback to proceed with the reopening.
TikTok has shown a proactive stance in addressing the government’s concerns by issuing several statements indicating their readiness to comply with Nepalese laws. Recently, TikTok submitted a letter to the Ministry of Information and Communication, affirming their commitment to adhere to local regulations and complete the necessary registration process.
The anticipated reopening of TikTok is expected to be a significant development, reflecting the government’s willingness to engage with global tech platforms while ensuring they operate within the framework of national laws. This decision marks a potential shift in policy, highlighting the importance of balancing regulatory concerns with the benefits of digital connectivity.
Stay tuned for further updates as the Nepalese government finalizes its decision and prepares for TikTok’s return to the market.
