Nepal’s Information Superhighway: Connecting Gandaki and Lumbini With Optical Fiber
16th August 2025, Kathmandu
Nepal is making significant progress in bridging its digital divide through a bold new initiative—the Information Superhighway Project. This ambitious program, jointly led by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) and Nepal Telecom (NT), aims to expand high-speed internet access across Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

Funded through the Rural Telecommunication Development Fund (RTDF), the project is a cornerstone of Nepal’s long-term vision for a Digital Nepal.
Bridging the Gap with the Midhill Project
At the heart of this initiative lies the Midhill Project, which involves laying about 1,900 kilometers of high-capacity optical fiber along major highways. This network will connect 194 municipalities across the two provinces, creating a strong backbone for digital services.
Once completed, the network will provide reliable infrastructure for internet connectivity, mobile services, and e-governance platforms. It is expected to drive innovation in e-commerce, telemedicine, digital education, and online banking, enabling rural communities to access opportunities previously out of reach.
Timely Step for a Connected Future
The agreement comes after years of delay, but the current implementation has been fast-tracked. With a clear directive from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Nepal Telecom is tasked with completing the project in just 120 days.
This rapid rollout is set to transform connectivity in Gandaki and Lumbini. The benefits go beyond internet access—public services such as healthcare and education will become more accessible, while businesses and entrepreneurs will gain digital tools to grow.
Ultimately, the Information Superhighway is not just about technology. It’s about inclusion, economic empowerment, and ensuring that every community—no matter how remote—has a place in Nepal’s digital future.
