25th March 2025, Kathmandu
The government has removed Kulman Ghising, the Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). The Cabinet meeting on Monday made the decision, to appoint Hitendra Dev Shakya as his replacement.

Ghising, credited with ending Nepal’s chronic power shortages, was dismissed while working in a remote Chepang village in Makwanpur. At the time, he was leading a project to bring electricity to homes in Khairang, a place where many had never had power before.
Controversial Decision Triggers Public Outrage
The sudden dismissal has sparked widespread criticism. Many believe the move is politically motivated, as Ghising is highly respected for his role in eliminating Nepal’s infamous 18-hour daily load-shedding. Under his leadership, electricity supply improved significantly, making power shortages a thing of the past.
Energy Minister Deepak Khadka played a key role in pushing for his removal. Khadka had previously downplayed Ghising’s contributions, stating that electricity imports from India, rather than internal reforms, ended the power crisis.
Ghising’s Final Contribution – Bringing Light to Khairang
Even on the day of his dismissal, Ghising remained focused on his mission. He was in Khairang, Makwanpur, where he switched on the first electricity meter for a 70-year-old resident, Tulkumari Chepang. Three other families also received electricity for the first time that day.
As part of the initiative, the NEA provided 303 free meters to poor families in Raksirang Rural Municipality. The local government honored Ghising for his dedication, and he promised to replace old poles and upgrade transmission lines to ensure better service in the area.
Political Motives Behind the Removal?
Many believe Ghising’s removal is driven by political interests rather than performance issues. His leadership at NEA transformed Nepal’s power sector, bringing stability and reducing dependency on imports. Critics argue that replacing such an experienced and result-oriented leader could put Nepal’s energy security at risk.
Minister Khadka had recently warned of possible power cuts, raising concerns that load-shedding might return under the new leadership. With Ghising gone, uncertainty looms over Nepal’s energy future.
Ghising’s Farewell Message
Before departing, Ghising addressed the villagers of Khairang. He stated, “A lamp’s light fades, but education and development must shine forever.” His last contribution—bringing electricity to a neglected rural community—symbolized his commitment to Nepal’s progress.
Now, many question the government’s decision to remove a leader who played a pivotal role in modernizing the country’s energy sector. With concerns over future power stability, public discontent continues to grow, pressuring the government to justify its decision.
