Illegal Foreign Telecom Services Under Scrutiny
The NTA, Nepal’s telecom regulator, has found that some individuals and businesses are illegally using signal boosters and amplifiers to strengthen foreign telecom services. This issue is particularly concerning in border areas, where these devices bypass Nepal’s licensed networks.
In an official statement, the NTA declared:
“It has come to our attention that in certain areas of Nepal (including border regions), mobile signal boosters and amplifiers are being used to artificially enhance the signal strength of foreign telecom operators. This activity violates Section 3 of the Radio Act, 2014, and Section 21 of the Telecommunications Act, 2053.”
Strict Legal Measures
The NTA has made it clear that anyone found using or distributing these devices will face serious legal consequences. The Telecommunications Act, 2053, and other relevant laws will be enforced to penalize offenders. The public has been urged to stop using or selling these unauthorized devices immediately.
Why Is This a Serious Issue?
Regulatory Violation – Only licensed telecom operators can provide mobile services in Nepal.
Security Risks – Unauthorized signal boosters can disrupt legal networks and pose security threats.
Revenue Loss – Illegal devices divert telecom traffic to foreign networks, harming Nepal’s telecom industry.
Public Advisory
The NTA has issued clear guidelines for the public:
Do not buy or use unauthorized signal boosters.
Report illegal telecom activities to the authorities.
Use only Nepal-licensed telecom services.
What’s Next?
The NTA has stepped up monitoring in border areas and other vulnerable regions. Telecom operators have also been asked to detect and report illegal signal boosting activities.
Ensuring Telecom Security
The NTA’s crackdown aims to protect Nepal’s telecom infrastructure and enforce national laws. Those violating the rules risk fines, equipment confiscation, or legal prosecution.
