In a move aimed at healing national divisions and acknowledging the immense cost of recent turmoil, the newly formed interim government of Nepal has officially declared all victims of the “Gen Z” youth movement as martyrs.

Nepal Protest Victims Martyrs

Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, in one of her first major decisions, signed the order to provide Rs 10 lakh (1 million Nepali Rupees) in relief to the families of each of the deceased.

The decision comes in the wake of widespread protests that shook the nation, leading to the resignation of the previous government and the appointment of a new interim administration. The protests, which were initially sparked by a controversial social media ban, quickly escalated into a broader movement against systemic corruption and entrenched political elites.

According to a report from Chief Secretary Eknarayan Aryal, the protests tragically resulted in 72 deaths. The casualties included 59 demonstrators, 10 prisoners, and three security personnel. In addition, the violence left 134 demonstrators and 57 police personnel injured.

A Step Toward Reconciliation

The government’s decision to grant martyr status to the victims is seen as a significant step toward national reconciliation. By recognizing the sacrifices made by the protesters and acknowledging the loss of life across all sides of the conflict, the Karki administration is attempting to bridge the deep chasms that have emerged in Nepali society.

The financial relief package of Rs 10 lakh per family is intended to provide a measure of support to those who have suffered a devastating loss. This gesture, combined with the official declaration of martyrdom, aims to honor the memory of the deceased and provide a path to healing for their families.

Prime Minister Karki, a former Chief Justice known for her judicial integrity and anti-corruption stance, has been widely seen as a consensus choice to lead the country through this volatile period. Her administration’s immediate focus on addressing the casualties of the protests signals a commitment to transparency and accountability—core demands of the youth movement.

As Nepal embarks on a new chapter, all eyes are on the interim government to deliver on its mandate of restoring stability, ensuring justice, and paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous future.
