Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Appointment
Gurung announced during a press briefing following the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. He assured the public that the appointment process is moving forward quickly and efficiently.
Committee Formed for Governor Selection
Gurung explained that the government has formed a recommendation committee for selecting the new governor. The committee is chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Bishnu Poudel, with Dr. Vijay Bhattarai and Dr. Bishwo Poudel as members. The committee is already working on the selection process to ensure that the appointment happens promptly.
No Political Disputes Behind Delay
Gurung dismissed claims that the delay in appointing the new governor was due to disagreements between political parties. He clarified that these allegations are not true. According to him, the delay is not caused by any division of power between the two major parties. Instead, the committee is functioning properly and working to appoint the governor as soon as possible.
Interim Governor Appointed
In the meantime, Deputy Governor Neelam Dhungana has been appointed as the acting governor of NRB. Gurung emphasized that this interim appointment ensures that the bank’s operations continue smoothly without any interruption. He reassured the public that Neelam Dhungana is fully capable of handling the responsibilities until the new governor is appointed.
Government’s Role in Tackling Nepal’s Financial Issues
Gurung also addressed concerns about Nepal’s position on the Grey List of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). He clarified that the responsibility of moving Nepal off the Grey List does not solely rest with the new governor. The government is actively working to improve the country’s compliance with international standards. Gurung emphasized that addressing money laundering and enhancing governance are critical steps in improving Nepal’s standing.
He pointed out that while the role of the governor is important, good governance and the central bank’s policies are just as significant in overcoming the challenges. Gurung stressed that the government is determined to improve Nepal’s international financial standing and raise the country’s status on the global stage.
Focus on Economic Growth and Stability
Gurung further explained that the new governor will play a key role in shaping the country’s financial policies. However, he noted that broader government initiatives related to good governance are also essential in ensuring a stable economic environment. He emphasized that financial stability will be crucial for boosting trade and reducing the risk of money laundering.
The Minister reassured the public that the government remains focused on resolving the challenges facing Nepal’s financial system. He also mentioned that the appointment of the new governor will contribute to the central bank’s ability to implement effective monetary and financial policies.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Gurung confirmed that the government is working swiftly to appoint a new governor for Nepal Rastra Bank. The newly appointed governor will have a crucial role in addressing the country’s financial issues. However, Gurung emphasized that good governance and government policies will also be essential to improving Nepal’s financial stability and international reputation.
