Nepal SBI Bank Looted: Around NPR 37 Million Stolen From Ghyanglekh Branch in Sindhuli

Nepal SBI Bank looting in Sindhuli has raised serious concerns over banking security in rural Nepal. An armed robbery took place at the Nepal SBI Bank branch located in Hayutar, Ghyanglekh Rural Municipality, on Tuesday evening.

According to police, the attackers looted approximately NPR 37 million after holding bank staff and a security guard hostage.
The incident occurred during evening hours when customer presence was minimal. Police confirmed that the robbers used firearms and sharp weapons to carry out the crime. The case of Nepal SBI Bank has triggered a large-scale police operation across the district.
Armed Group Storms Nepal SBI Bank Branch
Preliminary investigations reveal that around five masked individuals arrived at the bank in a Tata Sumo vehicle coming from the Banepa side. The suspects entered the Nepal SBI Bank branch fully armed.
They immediately overpowered the security guard and bank employees.
Police said the robbers restrained the security guard and threatened staff at gunpoint. They also used a khukuri, seriously injuring the guard during the attack.
The robbers then collected cash from the vault and counters before fleeing the scene.
This incident marks one of the largest recent cases where Nepal SBI Bank was looted in a rural setting, highlighting rising security challenges.
Vehicle and Driver Taken Under Control
After the robbery, a joint effort by residents and police led to a breakthrough. Authorities seized the Tata Sumo used in the robbery. The vehicle carried the embossed number plate Ba 3 Da 0398.
The interception took place in the Tuni Bhanjyang area of Ward No. 1, within Ghyanglekh Rural Municipality. Roshan Bhlon, Ward Chair of Ghyanglekh Rural Municipality–2, confirmed that the vehicle and its driver were taken under control.
The seized vehicle is believed to have played a key role in the escape plan after the Nepal SBI Bank looting incident.
Partial Cash Recovery After Nepal SBI Bank Looted
According to Ward Chair Roshan Bhlon, police have recovered two sacks of cash believed to be part of the looted amount. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact value of the recovered money.
The recovered cash and the seized vehicle are currently kept at the Area Police Office, Bastipur, for further investigation. Police are verifying whether the recovered amount matches records from the Nepal SBI Bank branch.
Despite this recovery, a significant portion of the looted money remains missing.
Search Operation Ongoing for Remaining Suspects
Police confirmed that other individuals involved in the Nepal SBI Bank looting case managed to flee toward nearby forest areas. Security forces have launched an extensive search operation covering forest routes, rural roads, and neighboring districts.
Multiple police units have been mobilized. Checkpoints have been reinforced. Surveillance has increased across Sindhuli and the surrounding regions.
Authorities stated that investigations are ongoing. They are analyzing CCTV footage, mobile records, and statements from witnesses. Police aim to identify all individuals involved in the armed robbery.
Rising Concerns Over Bank Security
The incident has sparked renewed debate over the safety of bank branches in remote and semi-urban areas. Financial institutions are now under pressure to reassess security measures, especially during evening hours.
