Nepal Telecom (NTC) has recently launched mobile services at upper Mustang and Nepal-China Border near Corala Naka. The services were launched with a GSM base station at “Chhoser”, starting from 13 Jestha, 2076.
The Base Station Tower(BTS) was operated by NTC with a launch program in that area. Mr. Subarna Kumar Bista, the Head of Lomangthang Village Body, along with other representatives from the office and NTC employees were in attendance during the program. The BTS at Chhoser, Lomangthangand Ghamiare currently operational and are providing mobile services in these areas.
Due to the remoteness of the area and added difficulty due to the harsh terrain, NTC has overcome several barriers to provide the signal in these areas. Huge efforts had to be put into the establishment of transmission links, tower and other infrastructures needed to start the services. These areas had no signal in the past, but NTC has launched both 2G and 3G mobile service in these areas so that people living there can easily make calls to anywhere around the world and enjoy the internet facilities provided by NTC.
The base station is located at an altitude of 4270m and servers Garthu, Nyamdo, Chungjung, and Corala villages. This tower will provide mobile services to around 150 households living in these villages.
This project is one of the many Governmental policies to expand the mobile service in all the distant areas of Nepal. This launch took a lot of expenditure and effort but provided little results, however, NTC is happy to be able to provide the much-needed communication services to the people living in these remote areas. Currently, only 2G and 3G services are being provided with the new towers but the company can easily expand the existing BTS to provide 4G communication services as per the necessity.
