Nepal Telecom Shuts Down Unregistered Social Media Platforms in Nepal

Nepal Telecom has officially blocked unregistered social media platforms in Nepal. The move follows a government directive aimed at regulating digital platforms. Earlier, Ncell had also announced similar action against unregistered platforms.

Government Directive Behind the Ban
On Thursday, Nepal Telecom released a notice confirming the shutdown. The company stated that the step was taken under the instructions of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA). The directive is based on multiple legal and policy decisions.
The notice highlighted:
An order from the Supreme Court of Nepal
A decision by the Council of Ministers
A ministerial-level decision of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT)
The Directives for Regulating the Use of Social Media 2080
Based on these frameworks, Nepal Telecom has disabled unregistered social media platforms across the country.
Nepal Telecom’s Official Statement
In its public notice, Nepal Telecom said:
“According to the NTA’s letter dated 2082/05/19, Ref. No. 597, and following the Supreme Court order, government decisions, and directives, this company has restricted social media platforms that are operating without being registered in Nepal. These platforms are shut down for now as per the given instructions.”
The telecom giant clarified that the future of these platforms will depend on upcoming instructions from the NTA.
Impact on Social Media Users in Nepal
This decision means that several popular but unregistered social media apps may not be accessible in Nepal. Users are already reporting disruptions when trying to log in or use these services.
The government argues that the move is essential to bring accountability and regulate content. Meanwhile, critics say it raises concerns over internet freedom and digital rights in the country.
Ncell Took Similar Action Earlier
Before Nepal Telecom’s announcement, Ncell had also restricted access to unregistered social media platforms. With both major telecom operators implementing the directive, unregistered platforms will remain inaccessible until further notice.
What’s Next for Social Media in Nepal?
The government has made it clear that only registered and listed platforms will be allowed to operate in Nepal. This means global tech companies must comply with local regulations to continue offering their services.
Nepal Telecom confirmed that if the NTA provides new instructions, the status of blocked platforms may change. Until then, users in Nepal will have limited access to unregistered social media apps.
