The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has ushered in a new era of data-driven decision-making for the sector.
Nepal Tourism Board
NTB recently launched ‘Tourism Insights,’ a monthly Nepal Tourism Board digital insights publication. This crucial new platform provides a centralized, clear, and fact-based resource for policymakers, industry professionals, and researchers.
It compiles key statistics, trends, and global perspectives relevant to the tourism landscape. The move aims to guide Nepal’s tourism industry towards sustainable recovery and development.
Launch Event and Industry Collaboration
The ‘Tourism Insights’ publication made its debut at a ‘Meet and Greet’ program in Kathmandu on Sunday. The event focused on the critical topic: ‘Current Status of Tourism and Strategies for Recovery.’
Key representatives and heads from various tourism associations attended the program. The launch was framed as a collaborative effort, stressing the importance of unified action between the public and private sectors to address the challenges facing the industry.
What Data Does ‘Tourism Insights’ Cover?
The new digital publication is a comprehensive repository of essential tourism data. Kaviraj Bhatta, an officer from the NTB Research Department, confirmed the publication’s scope.
It includes statistics on key metrics like visitor arrivals, main source markets, regional arrivals, foreign exchange earnings, and direct foreign investment figures.
Furthermore, the publication incorporates data and trends from influential international bodies. This includes the UN Tourism Organization and the World Travel and Tourism Council, ensuring a global context for local strategies.
Strategic Direction for Sustainable Development
Deepak Raj Joshi, CEO of the NTB, expressed confidence in the new platform’s utility. He stated that ‘Tourism Insights’ will furnish the essential data and strategic direction needed to propel Nepal’s tourism sector toward sustainable growth.
Joshi also provided updates on NTB’s ongoing efforts to protect the tourism sector amidst the current crisis. He detailed the steps taken to position Nepal as a safe travel destination on the global stage. These actions are vital for restoring international confidence in the destination.
Industry Leaders Urge Greater Government Focus
The launch event served as a forum for private sector concerns and recommendations. Ram Prasad Sapkota, Vice Chairman of the NTB, emphasized the necessity for closer coordination with the private sector. He also stressed the need to better articulate the immense value of tourism to the government.
NTB Board Member Rishi Bhandari voiced concern that the current government is not prioritizing tourism. He contrasted this with the slight attention given by previous administrations.
Board Member Narendra Bhatta, also General Secretary of PATA Nepal, strongly urged the initiation of long-term strategies during the current crisis. This, he argued, would prevent the further weakening of the tourism sector.
Private Sector Recommendations for Recovery
Private sector representatives at the event offered numerous actionable suggestions. Kumar Thapaliya, President of NATA and an NTB Board Member, highlighted that opening promotional offices in key markets like India was included in budget plans. However, he expressed worry that legal challenges hinder the NTB from executing all its functions effectively.
Vinayak Shah, President of the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), pointed out the hotel sector’s specific problems, underscoring the need for a unified approach. Private sector figures, including PATA President Khem Lakai, TAAN President Sagar Pandey, SOTTO President Man Bahadur Shahi, and others, offered practical advice.
Their suggestions centered on promoting Nepal as a safe destination through national and international media.
They also recommended inviting foreign influencers to showcase the destination’s safety. Crucially, they advised the government to form a dedicated task force to manage and overcome the crisis collectively.
The successful use of the Nepal Tourism Board digital insights platform will rely on the government and private sector collaboratively leveraging its data.
The Digital Commitment to Tourism’s Future
The ‘Tourism Insights’ publication represents a critical investment in technology and data. This digital approach ensures that decision-making is not based on guesswork but on solid facts.
By providing this wealth of information monthly, NTB empowers the industry to swiftly adapt to changing market conditions and global travel trends.
This digital commitment is key to stabilizing the industry and fostering future growth. It is a necessary step to help Nepal’s vital tourism sector recover and thrive sustainably.
