In a move that has ignited a fresh wave of optimism for the economic future of Western Nepal, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Chandra Prasad Dhakal has made a compelling case for the immediate launch of direct flights between Nepalgunj and India’s capital, Delhi.

Speaking at a crucial all-party discussion in Kathmandu, Dhakal underscored the project’s immense potential to serve as a catalyst for regional connectivity, tourism, and overall economic development.

The event, a collaborative effort between the Nepal Chamber of Commerce Banke and the FNCCI, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including former ministers, members of parliament, political party representatives, civil society members, and tourism entrepreneurs. Their collective presence highlighted the widespread consensus on the importance of this initiative.

President Dhakal didn’t mince words, stating that a direct flight would be a “substantial contribution” to the economic growth of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces. He painted a vivid picture of Nepalgunj as the “gateway to western Nepal,” a region brimming with untapped potential in tourism, agriculture, and other key sectors. This strategic air link, he argued, would unlock these opportunities, transforming the area into a vibrant economic hub.

“Nepalgunj has great potential in tourism, agriculture, and other sectors,” Dhakal emphasized. “A direct flight could make a substantial contribution to regional connectivity and economic growth in western Nepal. FNCCI fully supports your initiative and effort.”

The call to action comes at a time when the government of Nepal has made significant investments in tourism infrastructure. Dhakal pointed out that the physical infrastructure is already in place, and the focus must now shift to its effective operation. The Nepalgunj airport, he noted, is a critical piece of this puzzle, capable of serving as a key entry point for a new wave of Indian tourists.

These visitors could easily access popular destinations like the Bardia and Banke National Parks, as well as the revered pilgrimage site of Lumbini. The region’s unique position as a border area also presents a golden opportunity for hosting events and weddings, attracting a new market segment.

Beyond tourism, the FNCCI president highlighted the broader economic implications. He stressed that a direct flight would streamline trade and commerce, reducing travel time and costs for business professionals and exporters. This improved connectivity would facilitate the flow of goods and services, fostering a more dynamic and integrated regional economy.

Dhakal’s address also touched upon the role of the private sector in national development. He acknowledged the substantial investments already made by Nepali businesses and urged a collective mindset of “we can achieve within the country.” He cited the FNCCI’s own initiative to establish Nepal Public Limited Company with a capital of NPR 10 billion, a testament to the private sector’s commitment to developing infrastructure with domestic capital.

This spirit of self-reliance, combined with necessary foreign capital and a supportive policy environment, is what he believes will drive sustained economic progress. He also mentioned that the government, at the FNCCI’s initiative, has already amended over 30 laws to create a more investment-friendly environment, demonstrating a successful public-private partnership.

The path forward, as outlined by President Dhakal, is a collaborative one. He expressed confidence that a collective effort from all stakeholders—government, private sector, and civil society—could soon make the Nepalgunj-Delhi direct flight a reality. The message is clear: the infrastructure is ready, the potential is vast, and with effective, coordinated initiatives, Western Nepal is poised to take a significant leap towards prosperity.
