The party’s Science and Information Technology Department recently hosted a special program titled ‘Artificial Intelligence for Nepal’s Development: A Holistic Approach,’ which brought together technology experts, policymakers, and academics to discuss the multifaceted applications of AI, its opportunities, and its challenges. This event highlighted the crucial role AI can play in Nepal’s progress.

Nepal’s Place in the ‘Age of AI’

The program was inaugurated by Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who emphasized the need for Nepal to keep pace with technological advancements. He stated that AI could provide significant support in building a prosperous Nepal.

Sushila Mishra Bhatt, Head of the Science and Information Technology Department, referred to the current era as the ‘Age of AI,’ stressing that Nepal must not lag in technological progress. She highlighted that “Gen Z” is already well-versed with AI, making it essential for Nepal to embrace it for holistic development.

Multifaceted Use of AI and Opportunities in Agriculture

A special panel discussion, chaired by Congress leader Dr. Minendra Rijal, was also a key part of the program. Facilitated by Ujjwal Koirala, the panel included Professor Dr. Sudhan Jha of Kathmandu University, Digital Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office Dipesh Bisht, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communication Aadesh Khadka, and technology entrepreneur Sajana Maharjan. They presented in-depth analyses of various aspects of AI.

The discussion particularly focused on the application of AI in the agricultural sector. Department Head Bhatt provided examples, stating that AI holds the potential for ‘smart agriculture systems’ where farmers could use their mobile phones to select fertilizers based on soil quality or identify crop diseases. This could significantly boost agricultural production and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

Challenges of AI and the Need for Policy

Alongside its immense possibilities, the challenges of AI were also raised during the program. Experts expressed concerns about the risks of fake news, the ethical use of AI, and the lack of necessary policies. Joint Secretary Aadesh Khadka noted that without proper policy frameworks, technology could cause more harm than good. He emphasized the need for honest use, policy clarity, and robust regulation.

Significant Participation and Future Roadmap

The program saw remarkable participation from a diverse range of attendees, including technology experts, policymakers, and educators. Experts provided clear and practical answers to the questions raised by the participants.

According to Department Head Bhatt, such technical discussions will be institutionalized to form the basis for developing sectoral policies in the future. This initiative is expected to pave the way for the responsible and effective implementation of AI in Nepal.

In conclusion, the Nepali Congress recognizes AI as an indispensable component of Nepal’s development and emphasizes the need for policy initiatives for its proper use and regulation. Only through proactive policy preparation for AI development and utilization will Nepal be able to compete effectively in the ‘Age of AI’.
