The teaser for the upcoming Nepali film ‘Agnidahan’, based on the novel by acclaimed writer and journalist Lokmani Paudel, has been officially released.

Scheduled for release on Mangsir 7, the film tackles the sensitive issue of witchcraft accusations and the brutal punishments inflicted upon women in rural areas.

Teaser Highlights

The 1-minute and 11-second teaser gives a chilling glimpse into the dark reality faced by women accused of witchcraft. The central focus of the teaser is the torture women endure under the guise of “exorcism” by traditional shamans. A scene in the teaser shows a young girl terrified by the actions of an older woman accused of being a witch, emphasizing the impact such superstitions have on both women and children.

Director’s Vision and Cast

Directed by Ghanshyam Lamichhane, the film aims to raise awareness about the harmful practice of witchcraft accusations. The director expressed that the movie seeks to spread the message that no one is a witch and to help eliminate these beliefs across Nepal. The film features an impressive cast, including Prakash Ghimire, Pramila Tulachan, Mao Tse Gurung, Anupama Bhandari, Tulsi Kshetri, Bishnu Bastola, and Tara Bahadur Gurung.

Technical Team Behind ‘Agnidahan’

Kovidsharan Upadhyay has conceptualized the film, with Lokmani Paudel providing the story, screenplay, and dialogue. Parichhed Sen has co-written the screenplay and served as the chief assistant director. The cinematography is done by Dirgha Gurung, with editing by Dirgha Khadka and production design by Shankar Pandey.

Special Screenings and Awards

‘Agnidahan’ was screened in Sitamarhi, Bihar, India, in the presence of Girish Chandra Pandey, Commandant of SSB 20th Battalion, alongside the film’s production team. The movie has also been viewed by notable figures like former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda). In recognition of its social message, the film has been awarded the ‘Special Film Award’ by the Film Development Board of Nepal.
