Nepal’s Global Trade Push: FNCCI President Meets WTO, IOE
10th June 2025, Kathmandu
Chandra Prasad Dhakal, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), held crucial meetings with international economic leaders during the 113th International Labour Conference.
Nepal’s Global Trade Push
The discussions centered on strengthening Nepal’s global trade position, increasing foreign investment, and addressing the upcoming graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
Strengthening Ties with IOE
In a significant meeting, President Dhakal met with Roberto Suárez Santos, Secretary-General of the International Organisation of Employers (IOE). Their discussion focused on Nepal’s investment potential and the need for global partnerships.
Key Points Discussed:
Investment Opportunities: Dhakal highlighted promising sectors like tourism, hydropower, and ICT. He emphasized Nepal’s unique location between India and China, giving access to over 3 billion consumers.
Need for International Collaboration: He called for greater global cooperation to share knowledge and improve Nepal’s policy framework. Dhakal said such efforts would help attract more sustainable foreign investment.
Acknowledging IOE’s Role: He thanked IOE for supporting policy advocacy, employer training, and research. This support has enabled Nepalese businesses to engage in international forums.
IOE’s Response:
Secretary-General Santos praised Nepal’s private sector for its resilience and potential. He reaffirmed IOE’s commitment to work closely with FNCCI in capacity-building efforts and institutional development.
Addressing Trade Challenges with WTO
In a separate meeting, President Dhakal discussed Nepal’s trade concerns with Xiangchen Zhang, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The conversation focused on the risks Nepal faces as it moves toward LDC graduation.
Main Discussion Highlights:
LDC Graduation Impact: Dhakal welcomed the WTO’s decision to extend duty-free and quota-free access. However, he warned that the transition could hurt Nepal’s SMEs. He requested longer transitional support and technical help to meet new global trade standards.
Non-Tariff Barriers: Dhakal flagged serious issues with Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT). These restrictions, he said, make it hard for Nepali producers to compete.
Agricultural Subsidies: He criticized subsidies in developed countries that disadvantage Nepali farmers in international markets.
WTO’s Assurance:
Deputy Director-General Zhang promised continued support to improve Nepal’s trade capacity. He said the WTO would assist Nepal in boosting exports and navigating its LDC graduation.
FNCCI Urges Global Solidarity
President Dhakal also called on international organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations (UN) to ensure a fair and inclusive transition for Nepal.
Key Requests Made:
Trade Preferences: Continued preferential market access post-LDC graduation.
Technical Support: Help Nepali businesses meet international standards.
Level Playing Field: Reforms to tackle unfair practices like excessive subsidies in richer nations.
Dhakal stressed that Nepal needs global backing to sustain its growth and protect its local industries in the global economy.
Active Involvement of FNCCI Leadership
Dhakal was joined by FNCCI Vice President Jyotsna Shrestha, who also chairs the Employers’ Council, and Executive Member Babu Kaji Karki. Both leaders supported Dhakal’s call for deeper global cooperation and economic engagement.
FNCCI’s Global Outreach: A Strategic Push
President Dhakal’s participation in Geneva reflects FNCCI’s active global diplomacy. The organization is working hard to position Nepal as an attractive and competitive market for investment and trade.
As Nepal nears LDC graduation, FNCCI is focused on:
Creating a favorable investment climate
Securing fair global trade terms
Enhancing the capacity of local businesses
Looking Forward
FNCCI plans to continue working closely with international stakeholders. The goal is clear — drive inclusive growth, promote sustainability, and ensure Nepal thrives in the post-LDC global economy.
President Dhakal’s Geneva visit highlights FNCCI’s evolving global role. With stronger partnerships and bold advocacy, FNCCI is shaping a more secure economic future for Nepal.
