NMB Bank CEO Govinda Ghimire Appointed: Nepal Banking Leadership Changes

NMB Bank has appointed Govinda Ghimire as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the next four years. The decision was made during the Board of Directors meeting held on 7 March. Ghimire, who was previously serving as Senior Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO), will assume the CEO position starting 14 March.

Leadership Transition at NMB Bank
The current CEO, Sunil KC, is completing his second term by mid-March. As per the Bank and Financial Institutions Act (BAFIA), a single individual cannot serve more than two terms as the CEO of a bank. With KC stepping down, the bank has chosen Ghimire as his successor.
Govinda Ghimire’s Banking Career
Ghimire has been associated with NMB Bank since 2009. He started his banking career in 1995 at the Nepal Bangladesh Bank. Over the years, he has gained expertise in branch banking and credit banking.
In Asoj 11, 2079, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) of NMB Bank. Ghimire holds an MBS degree and a bachelor’s degree in law from Tribhuvan University. His extensive experience in the banking sector makes him a well-respected figure in the industry.
Sudesha Upadhyaya Promoted to Senior Deputy CEO
Alongside Ghimire’s appointment, the Board of Directors has promoted Deputy CEO Sudesh Upadhyaya to the position of Senior Deputy CEO. Upadhyaya was appointed as DCEO on 27 September 2022 alongside Ghimire.
Upadhyaya has been with NMB Bank for nine years. He began his banking career in 1998 at Standard Chartered Bank Nepal (formerly Nepal Grindlays Bank) and worked there for 11 years until 2009. He then gained six years of international experience working at Standard Chartered Bank Qatar and Mashreq Bank in Qatar.
In 2015, he joined NMB Bank as a Senior Manager. He was later promoted to Deputy General Manager, then Deputy CEO, and now Senior Deputy CEO. Upadhyaya specializes in international banking, corporate banking, SME banking, retail banking, and transaction banking. He holds an MBA degree from Tribhuvan University.
Ghimire to Lead NMB Bank from 14 March
As per the board’s decision, Govinda Ghimire will officially take over as the CEO of NMB Bank on 14 March. His leadership is expected to drive the bank forward over the next four years.
