12th September 2025, Kathmandu
NMB Bank Limited has issued an important update for its customers regarding its operations on Friday, September 12, 2025 (Bhadra 27, 2082).
NMB Operates Limited Branches
In response to ongoing national security challenges, the bank will open a select number of branches in the Kathmandu Valley for a limited period from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM. This proactive measure is intended to ensure that customers can access essential banking services, particularly those that are time-sensitive, while also maintaining a strong focus on the safety and security of both staff and visitors.
Strategic Operations in the Kathmandu Valley
The bank’s official notice specifies the seven branches that will be operational during the special hours. These branches have been strategically chosen to cover key residential and commercial areas across the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley, minimizing the need for extensive travel during a period of restricted mobility. The open branches are:
- Kathmandu District: Teku, Naxal, and Chabahil
- Lalitpur District: Kumaripati and Nakkhu
- Bhaktapur District: Gattaghar and Golmadhi
By focusing on these specific locations, NMB Bank aims to provide a reliable point of service for customers with urgent needs. This approach helps to manage the flow of people and maintain a safer environment compared to a full-scale reopening of all branches.
Focus on High-Priority Transactions
NMB Bank has clarified that the services available during this limited operational window will be focused on high-priority transactions. The bank has specifically highlighted the availability of Interbank Payment System (IPS) transfers, cheque clearing, and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) transactions. These services are crucial for businesses and individuals who need to complete urgent, large-value, or time-sensitive payments.
For instance, IPS is a system that facilitates bank-to-bank transfers for both personal and business needs, while RTGS is a real-time system for processing high-value transfers, ensuring immediate finality of payments. Cheque clearing is an essential service for businesses that rely on checks for supplier payments and other financial obligations. By prioritizing these services, NMB Bank is not only ensuring the continuity of its operations but also playing a key role in maintaining the liquidity and functionality of the broader financial ecosystem. Non-essential services, such as new account openings or loan applications, may not be available during this period, and customers are advised to plan their banking activities accordingly.
Encouraging Digital and Safe Practices
NMB Bank is also actively encouraging its customers to use its digital banking platforms, including its mobile and internet banking services, for non-urgent transactions. This is a critical component of the bank’s strategy to reduce the need for in-person visits and minimize the risk of exposure to the ongoing social and security challenges. Customers can use these platforms to perform a wide range of services, from checking account balances and transferring funds to paying utility bills. This emphasis on digital banking is a reflection of the evolving nature of the financial sector in Nepal, which is increasingly leveraging technology to ensure resilience and accessibility during times of crisis.
The bank’s decision to limit its hours and services aligns with the actions of other leading financial institutions in the country, such as Rastriya Banijya Bank and Nabil Bank, which have also introduced similar precautionary measures. This coordinated response highlights a collective effort by the banking sector to navigate the current national environment responsibly. By providing a transparent and detailed notice regarding its operational changes, NMB Bank is reinforcing its commitment to its customers and demonstrating its dedication to being a reliable financial partner during challenging times.
