5th January 2026, Kathmandu
In a move to celebrate the pioneers of Nepal’s economic backbone, the Nepal Remitters Association (NRA) has officially honored Mr. Nawaraj Ghimire for his transformative contribution to the national remittance sector.
NRA Honors Visionary Nawaraj Ghimire
The recognition took place during the association’s 20th Anniversary and Annual General Meeting (AGM), marking three decades since the industry moved from informal channels to a structured financial powerhouse.
Transitioning from Informal to Formal: The 1996 Turning Point
Before 1996, the majority of money sent home by Nepalese migrant workers flowed through informal, high-risk channels. Recognizing the need for safety and transparency, Mr. Ghimire took the bold step of utilizing his company, Annapurna Travel, to facilitate organized remittance.
This initiative didn’t just move money; it built trust. By creating a reliable system for the Nepalese diaspora to send earnings back to their families, Ghimire laid the groundwork for what would eventually evolve into ATT Remit Pvt. Ltd. a cornerstone of the modern money transfer industry in Nepal.
A Major Pillar of Nepal’s Economy
During the ceremony, Mr. Ritesh Mittal, President of the Nepal Remitters Association, praised Ghimire’s “courageous leadership.”
“Today, remittance is the primary source of foreign exchange for our country. This institutional growth was only possible because of the visionary foundation laid by leaders like Nawaraj Ghimire nearly thirty years ago,” Mittal stated.
Currently, remittance accounts for roughly 25-27% of Nepal’s GDP, keeping the national economy afloat and driving poverty reduction. The NRA highlighted that Ghimire’s focus on financial inclusion and systematic processes remains a guiding light for new fintech and remittance startups in 2026.
Why This Honor Matters in 2026
As Nepal continues to see a record-breaking surge in remittance inflows, recently reaching over 1,723 billion NPR annually, the importance of “formalization” has never been higher. Honoring the “Father of Formal Remittance” serves as a reminder of the industry’s roots:
-
Security: Protecting the hard-earned money of Nepalese workers.
-
Transparency: Helping the government track foreign currency reserves.
-
Institutional Growth: Moving from small travel agencies to global financial networks.
