NTA Seeks Broadband Status Update From Nepal Local Governments
12th April 2025, Kathmandu
The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has officially requested all local governments to provide updates on the operational status of broadband internet services in their respective areas.
NTA Seeks Broadband Status Update
This move aims to ensure nationwide digital connectivity and assess the effectiveness of previous broadband expansion initiatives.
Why is NTA Collecting This Data?
Under the Rural Telecommunications Development Fund, the NTA previously extended broadband internet services to all local government and ward offices across Nepal. However, with evolving administrative structures and the completion of some service contracts, the NTA now seeks to:
Verify whether broadband services are active or inactive in different regions.
Identify any local units left out during federal restructuring.
Assess the status of services where the initial two-year project period has ended.
Determine whether broadband services have been continued or discontinued post-project completion.
How Can Local Governments Respond?
The NTA has issued a public notice, urging local executives and ward offices to submit the required information within 15 working days from the notice’s first publication. The requested details include:
Current broadband service status (active/inactive) in their jurisdiction.
Reasons for discontinuation (if applicable).
Impact of federal restructuring on service coverage.
Any excluded areas during the initial project implementation?
The Importance of Reliable Broadband Connectivity
Broadband internet is crucial for:
Digital governance – Facilitating e-services and online administration.
Education & healthcare – Enabling e-learning and telemedicine.
Economic growth – Supporting businesses and digital entrepreneurship.
By ensuring up-to-date information, the NTA can address gaps, improve infrastructure, and enhance Nepal’s digital landscape.
What’s Next?
Local governments must cooperate promptly to help the NTA maintain an accurate database for future telecom development plans. This initiative aligns with Nepal’s broader Digital Nepal Framework, aiming for nationwide digital inclusion.
