40 Under 40: Rashmi Pant

Recognized by Onlinekhabar’s prestigious “40 Under 40” Influential Youths of 2082 list, Pant’s journey from an unexpected entry into banking to becoming the third-highest-ranking executive at Prabhu Bank is truly inspirational. Her story embodies dedication, strategic vision, and a pioneering spirit that is reshaping the financial landscape of Nepal.

The annual “40 Under 40” list, unveiled during a special ceremony in Kathmandu on International Youth Day (August 12, 2025) by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, highlights young individuals quietly driving significant change. Onlinekhabar’s Chairman and Managing Director, Dharmaraj Bhusal, emphasized the initiative’s goal: “Through 40 Under 40, we have tried to find those fireflies shining in the dark… This list is just a reflection of [individuals] challenging the narrative that nothing is happening in Nepal.” Rashmi Pant’s inclusion is a testament to her impactful contributions and unwavering commitment.

An Unplanned Beginning, a Purposeful Ascent

Rashmi’s professional path was far from predetermined. Her family envisioned a career in medicine, leading her to study science. While briefly considering Information Technology, she ultimately pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a focus on finance and marketing. An accomplished athlete in table tennis and badminton, her discipline from sports seemingly translated into her professional life.

Her true career began after completing her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Kathmandu University. While preparing for a PhD in the United States, a temporary job opening at Prabhu Bank unexpectedly altered her course. Despite her initial intent to work for just a year, Rashmi, who had minimal prior banking experience, found herself appointed as a Junior Officer. Over a decade later, she has become an indispensable leader in the sector.

“Now, I have no intention of leaving the banking sector anytime soon,” Rashmi affirms, setting her sights even higher. “I’m moving forward to lead a bank myself.” This ambition fuels her dedication to continuous personal development and a deep understanding of every banking facet, regardless of departmental boundaries.

Beyond Banking: A Future in Diplomacy

Rashmi’s vision extends beyond the banking world. She is already preparing for a future as a diplomat, currently pursuing a PhD in Political Science with a focus on foreign affairs at Tribhuvan University, a study she considers integral to her diplomatic aspirations. This demonstrates her remarkable foresight and dedication to lifelong learning.

Her success is also rooted in her family. The healthy rivalry with her sisters has been a powerful source of motivation, pushing her to always strive for leadership. Despite her financially stable upbringing, Rashmi believes that capability and diligence, not just overcoming struggle, are key to success.

Navigating Challenges and Championing Equity

Rashmi’s rapid ascent to a high-ranking position at a relatively young age is attributed to her exceptional diplomatic skills, ability to build strong connections, and highly effective communication style. In a sensitive sector like banking, where even minor decisions can have far-reaching economic impacts, her meticulous approach and adherence to financial discipline are paramount.

A key to her influence is her unique ability to seamlessly blend the invaluable experience of seasoned bankers with the dynamic energy of new entrants. This innovative approach, demonstrated by strategic management plans that quickly impressed Prabhu Bank’s leadership, is a secret to her success.

However, Rashmi is vocal about her concerns regarding industry practices, particularly the preference for experience over youth and, more significantly, gender discrimination. “There have been many moments at the workplace where gender-based discrimination has been discouraging,” she states, highlighting its adverse impact on women’s professional growth. Her outspokenness underscores her commitment to fostering a more equitable and merit-based environment.

Recognition and Philanthropy

Rashmi Pant’s contributions have not gone unnoticed at the national level. She was honored with the Prabal Janasewashree medal for her services to the banking sector, a prestigious award she received from former President Bidya Devi Bhandari. Her accolades also include the Saraswati Vidya Padak, ANZ High Commended Team Award, and Commended Laude Recognized.

Starting as a Business Planning Officer, Rashmi’s impressive trajectory at Prabhu Bank has seen her take on roles including Corporate Head, HR Head, Chief Corporate Planning Officer, and Chief Operating Officer, culminating in her current position as Chief Business Officer.

Beyond her professional achievements, Rashmi is also a dedicated social worker. She established the Mirmire Foundation, through which she actively engages in various community welfare activities, demonstrating her commitment to giving back to society.

Rashmi Pant embodies the spirit of a modern Nepalese leader – dynamic, visionary, and deeply committed to both professional excellence and societal betterment. Her journey continues to inspire countless young Nepalese to pursue their dreams and make a tangible difference in their country.
