Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital Celebrates 66th Anniversary with Record Maternal and Child Health Services

Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital, a leading specialized women’s health institution, celebrated its 66th anniversary with a grand ceremony.

The event, presided over by the Health and Population Minister, highlighted the hospital’s significant contributions to maternal Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital marks its 66th anniversary with outstanding achievements in maternal and child healthcare, including thousands of successful deliveries, advanced IVF services, and innovative social initiatives.

Starting in 2016, BS, with only 40 beds, the hospital now operates 489 beds and serves millions of women and newborns across Nepal. According to the annual report, the hospital conducted around 21,000 successful deliveries in the past year, while over 233,000 outpatients received essential health services.

Hospital Director Dr. Shree Prasad Adhikari highlighted the significant expansion of services at Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital.

“Through advanced gynecological endoscopic surgeries like laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, which totaled 357 procedures last year, along with mental health OPD services for 1,729 pregnant women and fetal-maternal echo services for 6,138 beneficiaries, we have greatly reduced the need for patients to seek care elsewhere,” he said.

He also emphasized the restoration of government IVF services, which had been suspended after the earthquake, providing immense relief to infertile couples. In the past fiscal year, 8,693 individuals accessed infertility OPD services, 298 underwent IUI, and 43 received IVF treatments.

On pioneering initiatives, he added, “With Nepal’s first-ever neonatal screening test, approximately 2,000 newborns were screened, identifying and treating 20 cases of various conditions. This reflects our vision of delivering innovative healthcare solutions and making a lasting impact on maternal and child health nationwide.”

Key Achievements in Maternal and Child Health

Inpatient Services: 32,951 women were admitted, with 20,908 deliveries resulting in 21,141 births. Cesarean sections accounted for 43.57% of total deliveries (9,110 cases).

Gynecology & NICU Services: 5,673 women received gynecological care, and 2,507 newborns were treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Outpatient Services: 185,806 women benefited from outpatient care.

Innovative Health Programs

The hospital introduced several pioneering initiatives:

Neonatal Screening: Around 2,000 newborns were tested, identifying 20 treatable cases.

Human Milk Bank (Amrit Kosh): Supporting nutrition for infants in need.

IVF Services: Restored post-earthquake to assist infertile couples.

The Health Minister praised these programs as exemplary models for the national healthcare system. He also announced plans for two satellite maternity hospitals in Chandragiri and Mahalaxmi municipalities, each with 25 beds, to meet rising demands in the Kathmandu Valley.

Social Responsibility and Community Initiatives

Paropakar Maternity Hospital has prioritized social responsibility:

Services for survivors of gender-based violence through the One-Stop Crisis Management Center (OCMC) (459 beneficiaries).

Free healthcare for the underprivileged (1,227 beneficiaries).

Post-airlift treatment for women in remote areas under the Presidential Women’s Upliftment Program (41 beneficiaries).

Free and safe abortion services for 1,667 women.

Vaccinations: 66,177 doses for children and 16,613 for pregnant women.

Education and Training

The hospital offers MD/MS programs in various medical disciplines, fellowships in infertility, and operates the Paropakar Nursing Campus for midwifery and BSc Nursing studies. A newly launched state-of-the-art simulation lab enhances practical training for healthcare professionals.
