Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s interim government has officially finalized the first 3 ministers who will take the oath of office today.

PM Finalizes 3 Ministers

This move is a crucial step towards forming a stable and technocratic government aimed at addressing the nation’s recent turmoil.

The three appointees Rameshore Khanal, Om Prakash Aryal, and Kulman Ghising are well-known professionals with strong public reputations, signaling a departure from traditional political appointments.

The New Ministers and Their Portfolios

The cabinet’s composition reflects Prime Minister Karki’s commitment to appointing individuals based on their professional expertise and integrity.

1. Rameshore Khanal: Minister of Finance

A respected former Finance Secretary, Rameshore Khanal will head the crucial Ministry of Finance. Khanal’s deep knowledge of economic policy and fiscal management is seen as essential for restoring stability to Nepal’s economy. His recent role as chairman of the High-Level Economic Reform Commission gives him a clear understanding of the challenges ahead.

2. Om Prakash Aryal: Minister of Home Affairs and Law

Senior advocate Om Prakash Aryal has been appointed to the Ministry of Home Affairs and will also lead the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. Aryal’s reputation as a legal crusader known for his public interest litigation and his work as a legal advisor to Kathmandu’s mayor, Balen Shah, positions him as a key figure in the government’s efforts to enforce the rule of law and fight corruption.

3. Kulman Ghising: The Energy and Infrastructure Minister

Perhaps the most celebrated appointment, Kulman Ghising, the former Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), will oversee the Ministry of Energy, along with the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development. Ghising is a national hero for ending years of crippling power outages (load-shedding) during his time at the NEA. His return to a leadership role has been widely praised and is a powerful symbol of the government’s commitment to delivering tangible results.

A Cabinet of Competence Over Politics

The selection of these 3 ministers highlights Prime Minister Karki’s strategy of prioritizing technocratic competence over political affiliations. None of the new ministers were elected lawmakers, and their appointments are a direct response to the “Gen-Z” movement’s demands for a clean, non-partisan government.

This small, initial cabinet is expected to set the tone for the interim government, which is tasked with holding free and fair elections. The nation waits to see how this trio of reformers will tackle the country’s most pressing issues.
