PM Oli Urges Employment-Oriented Education: Kathmandu University Senate Meeting Highlights

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli emphasized the need for a fundamental transformation in education to make it modern, practical, and employment-oriented.While addressing the 99th meeting of the Kathmandu University Senate held today at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, University Chancellor Oli urged the university to focus on producing a workforce that is capable of being employed and self-employed, rather than becoming unemployed. He also appreciated the positive efforts made by Kathmandu University in this regard.

He expressed the view that access to health education and other subjects for the general students should be increased and suggested a reconsideration of the current policy of providing up to 75 percent scholarships mainly in medical education.
Minister for Education, Science and Technology and Pro-Chancellor Raghuraj Pant urged that the Prime Minister’s concern and commitment to educational reform and transformation should be implemented. He stated that the ministry would strive to make Nepal an educational hub.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Achyut Prasad Wagle mentioned that efforts would be made to implement the concept of a research-oriented university alongside teaching.
Grace List Passed for Convocation
The meeting approved the grace list of 1,129 students who have obtained degrees at various levels under different schools for the second phase of the 30th convocation ceremony to be held on Jestha 30 in Dhulikhel. The grace list includes 118 international students.
The meeting also approved a proposed budget of NPR 4.038 billion for the fiscal year 2082/83, presented by Registrar Prof. Dr. Rajeev Shrestha. Similarly, the audit report of the previous fiscal year and the progress report of the current fiscal year were also approved.
The meeting nominated Ratna Koirala from the group of donors, Prof. Dr. Divya Singh (former Dean of the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University), community health specialist Dr. Rita Thapa, Vice-Chancellor of Mid-Western University Prof. Dr. Dhruva Kumar Gautam, psychiatrist Ananta Prasad Adhikari, and Dr. Bikash Adhikari from among the university’s teachers as members of the university senate.
New Framework for Collaboration Between University and Dhulikhel Hospital
The meeting also approved a report outlining a new framework for future collaboration between Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital. The report was prepared by a facilitation committee led by National Planning Commission member Geeta Kumari Paudyal Adhikari, formed during the meeting on Magh 4 to resolve mutual issues between the two institutions. According to the new framework, if either institution wishes to discontinue the collaboration, it must notify the other six years in advance.
25-Year Journey of the University Documented in Book
Following the senate meeting, Prime Minister Oli launched volumes 1 and 2 of the book “Kathmandu University: The First 25 Years”, written by the university’s founding registrar Dr. Sitaram Adhikari. Prime Minister Oli remarked that such documentation by individuals involved since the university’s inception, which began from a barren hill, will help future generations understand its history.
