The National Business Initiative (#NBI) has expressed deep concern and strongly condemned the recent vandalism and arson attacks on important physical infrastructure and private sector properties during the recent protests in the country.
Private Sector in Crisis
The NBI has warned that such activities are certain to have a profound impact on the nation’s economy and that it may take a long time to return to normalcy.
The organization has requested that the relevant authorities ensure fair compensation for the loss of life and property suffered by the private sector.
Impact of Violence on the Private Sector and Economy
The NBI has expressed concern that the private sector has been a victim of protests for decades, and this trend is demoralizing the business community.
The NBI states that the private sector plays a crucial role in creating jobs, increasing productivity, and fostering economic growth in Nepal.
If the private sector does not feel secure, it is certain that there will be a decline in productivity and employment, leading to long-term negative effects on the economy. In such a situation, it would be difficult to attract both domestic and foreign investment.
Solidarity with Gen-Z and a Call for Peace
The NBI has expressed its full solidarity with the Gen-Z-led campaign to end corruption. They have stated that the path forward must be guided by a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
Given the challenges to the security of both human lives and physical property during this period of transition to an interim government, the NBI has urgently requested the Nepali Army and other active security agencies to take immediate and effective measures to maintain peace and order and to guarantee the safety of the public.
The NBI has also extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the youths who lost their lives during the protests and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
The organization has affirmed that the private sector is committed to continuing its operations, sustaining employment, and creating new jobs, provided that a sense of security is guaranteed.
