In a significant development in Nepal’s digital landscape, the government has proposed legislation that would introduce fees for registering .np domain names. The move, outlined in the bill aimed at regulating information technology and bolstering cybersecurity, marks a departure from the current practice where individuals and organizations could obtain .np domains free of charge.

Under the proposed legislation, individuals and entities seeking to register a .np domain would be required to pay a fee, with renewals mandated every two years. However, the exact fee structure has yet to be finalized, leaving stakeholders awaiting further clarification from authorities.

Proposed Legislation in Nepal

The bill stipulates that existing .np domain owners must ensure their domains are registered within six months from the enactment of the legislation. Failure to comply could result in potential repercussions, signaling a firm push towards standardizing and regulating the domain registration process.

.np Domain Registration

Nepal’s .np domain registration is currently managed by the Mercantile Office System, a key player in the country’s digital infrastructure. The proposed changes are expected to bring about a more structured and sustainable framework for managing Nepal’s online presence while potentially generating revenue to support further advancements in the digital sector.

As Nepal prepares to navigate the intricacies of modern cyber landscapes, the proposed legislation underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a secure and regulated online environment for its citizens and businesses.
