The recent Gen Z-led protests across Nepal have resulted in widespread arson, targeting police offices, government agencies, and transport-related infrastructure. This has caused extensive damage and disruption of essential public services.
Protests Disrupt Transport Services
Entrepreneurs have reported that critical documents such as bill books, road permits, and inspection passes of vehicles seized by traffic police were destroyed during the incidents.
Rajendra Bikram Baniya, General Secretary of the Nepal Truck Transport Entrepreneurs Federation, said that the loss of these documents has created serious challenges for business owners.
He urged the Department of Transport and relevant authorities to provide necessary facilitation and to avoid imposing further difficulties on the affected businesses.
Meanwhile, the Department of Transport confirmed that its physical structures, electronic equipment, printing machines, and servers were severely damaged during the protests. Consequently, the department’s IT systems have been completely shut down, suspending driving license distribution and electronic vehicle registration services.
The Federation stated that after contacting the Director General of the Department, they were informed that services cannot resume until the infrastructure and technology systems are restored.
Despite these setbacks, the Federation has called on all seven provincial transport offices and traffic police units to provide maximum cooperation and assistance to ensure a smoother environment for businesses.
In a meeting with Keshavraj Sharma, Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, the Federation stressed the urgent need for coordination among all agencies to resolve the crisis. Secretary Sharma assured that the ministry would take the necessary steps to address the issue.
