14th September 2025, Kathmandu

Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s interim government has finalized the appointment of three key ministers, with their official oath-taking ceremony scheduled for tomorrow morning at Sheetal Niwas.

Rameshore Khanal Finance Minister

Among them, former Finance Secretary Rameshore Khanal has been appointed as the new Finance Minister of Nepal.

According to sources at Baluwatar, Khanal will head the Ministry of Finance, bringing his long-standing expertise in fiscal management and economic reform. He previously chaired the High-Level Economic Reform Commission and is widely respected for his pragmatic approach to public finance.

Alongside Khanal, senior advocate Om Prakash Aryal has been appointed as Minister of Home Affairs, with additional responsibility for the Ministry of Law. Former Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Kulman Ghising will take charge of the Ministry of Energy, along with portfolios covering Physical Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development.

The list of appointments is preliminary, and more portfolios may be allocated to the new cabinet members in the coming days. Formal appointment letters have already been prepared, signaling the government’s commitment to quick execution.

Why Rameshore Khanal’s Appointment as Finance Minister Matters

Khanal’s entry into the Ministry of Finance is seen as a stabilizing move at a time when Nepal is grappling with economic uncertainty following months of political unrest and nationwide protests.

His experience in fiscal management, coupled with his track record in policy reforms, is expected to help steer Nepal’s economy toward recovery.

Observers note that his tenure will likely focus on:

Strengthening fiscal discipline and revenue collection.

Promoting transparency in government expenditure.

Attracting foreign investment to rebuild economic confidence.

Supporting IT, energy, and infrastructure sectors as growth engines.

Cabinet with Reform-Oriented Faces

Om Prakash Aryal’s legal activism and history of public interest litigation align with expectations for governance reform, while Kulman Ghising’s leadership in Nepal’s power sector revival signals a renewed focus on energy independence and infrastructure development.

The appointment of Khanal as Finance Minister is being closely watched by both domestic and international stakeholders, as his policies will play a decisive role in shaping Nepal’s post-protest economic landscape.
